Identify old knife, clean and repair

I have an old G96 Brand pocket knife, made in Japan. I inherited from my grandfather-in-law who likely got it in the 50's in Japan. The larger blade doesn't lock open. Looking for advice on cleaning and maintenance. Thank you!

Check to see if there might be a build up of pocket lint where the lock fits into the blade tang. I use a Popsicle stick cut off with a sharp edge and split in half to scrape out any residue in there. Works inside the blade well also. After scraping blow it out with compressed air and put a drop of oil on the pivot.If that doesn't work then the tang is probably worn away.No real easy fix for that.

These knives were imported from Japan and sold in USA, in 1970's i think.. I doubt the G96 knives were actually ever sold in Japan.

You're probably right, I'm making a lot of presumptions with it. I know he was stationed in Japan in the 50's and I couldn't find anything similar (curved blade).

It's approximately 3.5in closed.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot. I tried a Q-tip and compressed air with some result.

MIlaw: Got this about a month or so ago. 6" closed, only one I'd seen up until then. Oddly, the shield is on the pile side and upside down relative to most knives. Looks like a factory edge. Not a Buck but not a bad copy for $12. Good luck with yours. J.O'.
