Found this Dexter opening ingredient sacks in a feed mill. When the copper sulfate scum would build up the guy cleaned it up on a wire brush on a bench grinder so it's badly scratched. Edge was good and it's my favorite meat carving knife. Never can decide whether to polish the blade because I'm afraid I'll lose the Dexter stamp.

Interesting where you make your 'finds' isn't it. For a long time to me a knife was just a tool and what ever knife was handy when I needed one was the one I needed. Congrats on finding that one. ::nod::

Finds like that are the best. I gave him a utility knife and a fifty pack of blades and left with the Dexter and a badly used Montgomery Wards.

Dexter is Dexter Harrington, son of Henry Harrington of Harrington Cutlery Co., Southbridge, Massachusetts. (1818)
They made very good and desirable cutlery. I have several of their knives. Page one.
In 1935 they merged with John Russell Company to form Russell-Harrington Company. Apparently, still in business.

Nice knife, Bill. ::tu::

Those Keen Kutter boxed silverware sets are sweet! I've been hoping to find a decent one at a reasonable price at auction.

Are there any maker marks on the pieces?

I've done a few of these blade blanks from Jantz. Their VG-10 blanks are pretty nice quality, this santoku blank runs over $100. I finished it with black micarta and ironwood.

I just picked up this smaller blank to work on for the wife.

My latest Remington find:a carving set and an extra knife thrown in. Handles are faux stag(some kind of black ugly material)but there is just a hint of someone sharpening the blade(thankfully not with a power tool)and for three bucks I ain't complaining!

Tony Bose paring Zulu, handled by Rick Menefee. Used every day for 5 years, dosen't get more "honest" or "hard working" than that.

After a year of everyday use, our nakiri looks as good as the day we received it. The ZFinite is an exceptional steel. Edge kept up on a 9k japanese stone.
