The guy who rehandles my knives is a flint knapper as well as forging his own steel for knives. he shoed me some flint that he heat treats. never knew about that. It really colors up the flint. pretty amazing what they do with a rock. he holds classes and belongs to some kinda association and travels to shows alot. He was forging up some old saw chains for knife work. His style doesnt interest me but I guess he sells a bunch. Right now he is building a power hammer out of a wood splitter. We live along french creek in NW PA and there are tons of arrow points and tools to be found in the fields and knolls along the river. When the fields are plowed the flint hunters are out. I guess its getting harder to find them now.

It was a surprise to me when I first heard of the Indians cooking flint before working it. But evidently a common process.

flint that is heat treated

I never heard of that

Thanks for the post,

I am going to do some research about that. That what is great about AAPK is that there is such a wide wide range of knowledge throughout the forum

I recently got this arrow head from Kolvir as part of his 2023 POS "gift" to me. I dont know much about arrowheads, most you see are gray or black and this one is light colored. Different materials have different colors?

That’s awesome!!! If you are curious and have time I think you may be able to identify that type of point; there is a pretty good website that helps identify points it’s “projectilepoints.net”
Awesome looking point!!

Here is one that I finished yesterday, it’s 4-3/8” long. Definitely the biggest one I’ve knapped so far.
I plan on hafting this blade to a handle when I get the chance.

I napped yesterday too, but when I woke up I had nothing to show for it. That looks great.

Thanks a lot OLDE CUTLER.

I found a small unimpressive cobble in my pile of rocks and decided to break it open to see what the material looked like inside.
It broke fairly easy, (which is a blessing to any knapper) but it wasn’t until I held it up to the sky that I truly appreciated what I had.
1-11/16” long and currently fixed to a necklace.
