Surprising how similar the Dunlap ( a brand name used by Sears Roebuck and Co ) is to this E C Simmons Keen Kutter hewing hatchet that has a head length of 6 3/8" x 4 13/16" cutting edge

Here's 2 Marbles Safety Axes that I have. The one on the right has a left facing hook on the "A" in the word "MARBLES" meaning it was made pre-1930s. The newer boxed Safety Axe was made in the early 2000's. Both are No. 5 unflanged Hawks. I just can't get enough of Marbles outdoor products. ::ds::

Toolboy,
that is a great hatchet and in beautiful condition.
I didn't think of Dunlap being a Sears name. What I like is that my hatchet could have been made by Simmons.
I like that term; hewing hatchet.
Do you have a collection of tools that you could post on "pictures of miscellaneous stuff & things"?

I purchased this (with a handle) True Temper Flint Edge at an estate sale over the weekend and she was in some rough shape.
The handle busted after a couple swings so I ordered a replacement from Amazon!

In the mean time, her she is......

Sweet hatchets and axe videos. I DVRed Modern Marvels on History Channel a few months back on the history and technology behind the axe as a weapon and tool. Episode 643 from 05/08/2008, pretty interesting. ::tu::

Thank you Joe and redrider. I learned a lot from that axe video. Nice knife and hatchet Joe. I picked up two double bit axes at the flea market. They were rough but cleaned up nicely. I'll post a picture...

Thanks redrider and Mike. I'd like to see those axes mike.

Redrider, I hope they talked about the redesigned American axe and the woodsmen who harvested trees from Main to Washington.

Although a diehard vintage pocket knife collector I do have a near mint Warren Axe and Tool hatchet. I also have a wooden shipping container and an shipping tag. These were made in my hometown of Warren PA. once the home of a branch of CASE knives as well. How cool is that

"Around the turn of the 19th century, more than 300 different ax-head patterns were being manufactured in the United States. Many were nearly identical. To simplify identification and eliminate unnecessary or duplicate patterns, the Ax Manufacturers' Association agreed to set a standard, which resulted in a standard chart of ax patterns."

"Ax-head patterns were also adapted to the timber that was available in the local area. The double-bit ax was originally developed in Pennsylvania. But the double-bit axes with a long, narrow, heavy ax head and a long handle, were developed for cutting large trees in the Pacific Northwest. Some of the patterns from this area were the Puget Sound, the Young's felling pattern, the Redwood pattern, and the Humboldt pattern. The first double-bit ax was probably made by William Mann in Pennsylvania at about 1850."

Top picture is my Plumb Boy Scout axe that has seen a lot of use and a Lakeside axe (Montgomery Ward) and. Also a pair of double bit axes I bought at the flea market for $10. No names on either one of them. They were rusty and rough, I'm working on them...

Those are really looking nice, Mike. The Lakeside looks pretty big.
Do you put mineral oil on the handles?

Thanks Joe. I did put mineral oil on the handles. The wood was dried out and looked white. I didn't have any linseed oil which might be better?

I love axes, hatchets, etc. This pic shows a few of my collection. I have added a few since this pic was taken. Sometimes I snag heads off ebay, forums or at garage sales/antique shops. Clean them up a bit, hang them and take pics. The only one that really gets used is the small Wetterlings.

Is there an "Anyone Collect Saws" thread? ::paranoid::
