Antique chisels? Hand forged?
Re: Antique chisels? Hand forged?
KleenCut61 is absolutely correct. There is some information on the socket "chisel".

Those gouges come in all sizes from 1/8'' up to about 6" across the cutting edge.
Another name for them is wood slips or slicks.
The firmers I posted are about 4" across the face but there is nothing for scale.

There is a PDF on this link...
https://www.davistownmuseum.org/PDFsfor ... er_PDF.pdf
There is mention of a Snow, and Nealley "pickaroon" (whatever that is)
Sorry Scott, I thought your tools were MUCH newer. You might have a museum piece there.

I just looked up Pickaroon... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pickaroon
It's that spike tool they use for moving logs around.
I assume it is in that museum inventory under wood working tools? Snow,& Nealley were apparently in the logging tool business.

A bark spud or de-barker and a pickaroon are relatively commonly seen tools if you live in an area where logging takes place.

Where I live in the pan handle there is nothing left but straight rows of pulp wood/pole pines. This area was so heavily stripped that there is almost no trace of the original hardwoods that were native here.KleenCut61 wrote:Hi ,I was watching Axe Men on History Channel one Night , on the logging History of Central Florida, Of which there is a logging industry Based Museum, I was like" Wow" There Were a lot of trees in florida Back in the Day !!Something Told me you May have some of the Remainants of that by gone era .. When I first moved here, and did not know the history I was amazed at how the trees were all the same, and grew in dead straight rows.
Little did I know they are all planted by guys walking in a straight line putting a seedling on each side after 4 paces. Otherwise this would all be swamp.

same way here in my area, teens planted rows of pine trees. My county has lot's of state woods after all was logged out for the Great Chicago Fire. People found out nothing else would grow on the land and moved on leaving it all to foreclose sure. Lot's of deer and wild Turkeys.
