What's the hole for?

Post by Railsplitter »

I've seen these holes on Awls before. My SAK has one on the Awl too.

Anybody know what the hole's intended purpose is?

Thanks.

Sewing/stitching, as in tarp, tent or sail repair, etc. At least that’s the purpose of many of them. That one doesn’t look much like an awl to me. ::shrug:: Doesn’t have a very sharp point.

The thread goes through the hole, when stitching, with an awl.

You use two pieces of thread like a sewing machine. Push the threaded awl thru then pass the bottom thread thru the loop, pull the awl back thru. Then push it into a new hole keep repeating.

I've never seen the idea behind this design. They tried to combine the small screwdriver with a punch/awl/sewing eye. Basically, all my Leathermans except the Wave have an awl on them--and I've tried to use the really small screwdriver when I needed an awl, and it didn't work too well. Worked, but not great.

For this purpose it should be more of a needle and less of a blade. But it serves as a drill too.

Kind of strange. Yesterday my son asked what the awl was for on his SAK. So I told him. Then last night that video popped up on YouTube. Without even searching. So I sent it to him, then remembered this thread. I haven’t given the awl a second thought in years, then it comes up 3 different ways in a few days.

Really strange timing all around, but that’s how life works.

Glad you guys liked the video.
