I do believe that they offered a similar knife to US paratroopers. I have seen what you described but etched "Commando", although this may simply have been a brand. Wiseguy posted a knife similar to what you mention but with a boy scout etch.

My feeling is that this pattern may have been initially a civilian pattern that was adapted by the military, such as the Collins & Co pattern #18 bowie knife. It will be interesting to hear what other members have to say.
