Some of you guys about my age (going on 70) might know what I mean when I say that somewhere back in one far corner of your memory there is a dusty old file cabinet full of things long forgotten. But from time to time stuff happens that causes one of the drawers of that file cabinet to fly open and the contents get dumped right on your feet. Such a thing happened to me the other day while rummaging thru a forgotten box of stuff in the drawer. I took these out and looked at them and all of a sudden remembered what they were and when I made them. I think these were my first wood carvings when I was 8 or 9 years old, carved from scraps of wood with a Kamp King or maybe a Sabre pocket knife. A quarter is shown with the miniature guns for scale. As you can see there is a variety or actions and rifles represented, as well as a few pistols. I can recognize a M1 carbine, lever actions, a double barrel shotgun, a Thompson machine gun, and others.Then I got to looking at the one with the end of the barrel whittled down to a point and briefly wondered why that one was like that. THEN it hit me, that was my favorite, a Winchester model 70 sporter, which was my favorite at the time. Not that I had one, but it was my favorite at the time. And the reason for the end being whittled down to a point, well every smart adze 8 or 9 year old has to have something to get people to "look at me". I carried this one in my mouth and used it as a toothpick!! I can even recall why some have the trigger guards drilled and some do not. The "early" ones were not drilled because I did not have a drill at the time. The "later" ones have the trigger guard drilled because they came after the time mom and dad got me a Stanley egg beater hand drill for Christmas. Good thing I did these when I was 8 or 9, because now days I dont think I could handle pieces this small.

Thanks. Not my idea. I seen a few others make these so I had to try one. Probably the next one I'll carve all the bark off and give the top a different shape and maybe do a little wood burning to dress it up a little.

OC...your miniature gun collection is awesome. Tis a darn shame nowadays, a young man wouldn't dare take those to school for "show and tell." He'd never get back in school.

Just added these mini dekes to my flock. Barrow's Goldeneye on left, Common Goldeneye on right. We see the Common Goldeneye here twice a year, coming and going when migrating. The only place I have ever seen Barrow's Goldeneyes was on Yellowstone Lake when we were in the park years ago.

I call this a limb bird. I read a article some where, can't seem to locate it, on them with a picture. So I'm going off memory and my first attempt at one. Tried to paint it like a chichadee. Overall I'm pretty happy with it.
