Wood carving projects

Usually my wood carving projects seem to go in this direction.
Wood Duck, Hooded Merganser, Canvasback, Pintail at front.
Or sometimes like this.
Mallard on stained pine box.
Redhead on cherry box.
Now days I used an Exacto carving knife for the mini decoys, disposable blades, but I still resharpen them.

Those are really nice OC. I have only one wood carved duck from Big Sky Carvers. Maybe you should open a store here and start selling some.

Thanks for your comments. I have been carving decoys, both full size and mini since 1986. Never really tried to sell them. We have quite a "flock" around the house now. On the full size, I still use my Grandpa's RT Brand draw knife that is over 100 years old. Wow, what an edge you can put on that one.

Does anyone do Santa carvings? I really enjoy them and would love to learn from others that carve them. Thank you, John

A good looking Viking you've got there. I've seen some Santa stuff on here. About the only carving I do on anything with a face is when I shave of a morning. That Viking is great, be sure and post any Santas you do.

Did you mean this "Hoodie" (Hooded Merganser)? I make two different sizes.
Also two different sizes of "Woodies" (Wood Duck).

The idea is simple - cut away everything that doesn't look like a duck.
It's the talent part that escapes me!
Some absolutely beautiful work, OC!!
Ever been to the Decoy Museum in Havre de Grace, MD? Your work would be worthy!!!

stagman, You are so right about the pleasure provided by a pipe. I do believe I will join you in a bowl full right now.

Cool Santa's and quiet a variety. I think my favorite is the unpainted one. But all well done. Envious.

I have not been there yet, but have a book that has many photos of the decoys in the museum there. Some very old and historic pieces. Totally out of my league. I use patterns by Anthony Hillman, which are patterned after decoys from around World War I or shortly before. The working decoys from that period had feather details painted on instead of carved in. The woods used are what was plentiful in the individuals area of residence. I have used mostly cedar and pine in my ducks.
