I was disappointed with the Old Timer tool. Mine came with every tool dull. I still haven't gotten them totally sharp. I got the idea from a video that Mike Stinnet did on u-tube. He used a tool to put the scales on snakes that he carves on canes and walking sticks. I was going to try it with a blade but the u tool was so much faster and more consistent.

I'm not sure which brand but they make a shaped fish scale wood burning tip in more than one size. If you look back at my mermaid I used a wood burner for her scales.

Mr Watch thanks for sharing. I'm thinking about investing in a better wood burner. I thought about wood burning the scales in but the cheap one I have the heat is very inconsistent. I was considering highlighting the scales with it to see how it might turn out. What do you think about doing that?
I think I'm going to try to make a small fishing fly to mount in the mouth to hang it by.

I found this small article, no picture, in a 1932 newspaper.

Also from a 1932 newspaper. Sorry about the gaps, but not difficult to figure out.

Just curious, Skip, but you're posting a lot of 1932 clips (very interesting, by the way!)
Where are you searching to find 'em?

I also carved another rooster in a different stance then added some of the flowers I made out of match sticks. I called it "pecking wild flowers".

Thanks I really appreciate that. I always had a love and liked using knives and especially the slip joints for several years now. My dad passed away 3yrs ago. We farmed together my whole life and l found that carving took my mind off things. That's when I started carving. It's really relaxing and I really like using my knives to create something. I still have a lot to learn.
Always good to hear from you.

Work in progress. Almost there. I need more tips or advice from you other carvers on carving these. Used my new GEC 62 pocket carver in smooth white bone.

Doesn't look like you need any advice Doug. The round ball is always the hardest part for me and you got that part whipped. Looks good.
And obviously the 62 will whittle.

Thanks. The 62 does whittle nice I wish it were just a little thicker at the top on the backside of the blade. My fingers got a little sore doing push cuts carving with it.
I struggle with the round ball part to.Some people can make these seem so easy. Did you get my message I sent you?
