Whittlin" on whittlin' knives

Post by Mr. Chips »

Here are some Opinels that I modified to be good whittlers.

Nice work on those Opinels. You have obvious skills. ::tu::

I started some embellishment on one of mine, including a "easy open" radius, but never continued with it.
I saw it the other day. Maybe I'll try again.
I haven't tried changing the blade profile.

This is what I wish I could have done with that Opinel Kit I had the other day. Instead I ended up with
what looked like a blade on the end of a broom stick. No whittling or carving talent here. ::facepalm::
You guys did some GREAT work! ::tu::

#8 all of them

The wolf was done on what I think they call their ebauche model, with extra large handles with carving in mind

I didn't do this kind of work on my first efforts either. This is acquired skill, which means it takes practice.

If you want to do good work on knife handles, get some pieces of wood the same size as the knife handles and practice on them A LOT first.

A tourist to New York asked a resident how to get to Carnegie Hall. "Practice" was the answer!

It is true for pretty much anything - skiing, roping, whittlin' or playing the trumpet. Nobody is an expert on their first try. (Or even the tenth try)
