Thanks. Yes I am not much of a collector. I enjoy the beauty of a nice knife and it's quality but I also like to carry and use them also. This pocket carver is exactly something I've been looking for in a carving/ whittling knife.

All 3 blades are 'Wharncliffe-like'. Is this what wood carvers want ? What other blade profiles work well for carving ? Seems odd to have all 3 blades the same unless no other blade profile works for wood carving.

Nice, Doug ::tu:: ... I should be receiving mine in a couple of days.

kj, I thought it was a bit odd too, to have three wharncliffe blades. I will end up modifying the blades as I use and sharpen them. It's always nice to have a different array of knives/blade shapes; you will always find special uses for them. I have a camillus #72 whittler that I pretty much only use the coping blade (modified) for carving eyes. Some carvers I know carve with only wharncliffe style blades while others only use clip or modified clip blades ... all a matter of preference and need I guess. That's why it's good to buy as many pocket knives as you can afford, at least that's what I tell my wife ...

Don,thank you for explaining this to me, a person who has so far only carved pencil tips.
I just picked up this Tidioute Carver with smooth white bone. Very nice knife, --- But, all 3 blades are, ---- Dull. One side of blade has steep very narrow edge grind, and the other side almost no edge grind.
This is in contrast to the many GEC knives i have received in the past few years, all of which arrived with shaving sharp blades.
The Wharncliffe blade with perfectly straight edge is the easiest blade of all to sharpen. If others also received this knife with dull blades then i bet GEC was training a new person at the edge grinding station.
How sharp are the blades on your Carver ? Note: i am asking about the 3 blade Whittler 62, not the half congress 62.

You are correct, kj ... my pocket carver has a narrow edge grind also. I will remove the bevel so there will be no resistance when slicing through wood. The pocket carver will make a nice little whittling knife for small projects or detailing on medium/large projects. It's a nice knife ... I wish they would do another run of the Courthouse Whittler one of these days, along with the Grinling Whittler.

Enjoy your pocket carver ::tu:: ...

Don, by "remove the bevel" do you mean you will sharpen both sides to a more narrow angle ? i.e. it might be 40 degrees per side now and you would like about 15 degrees per side ?
And which pattern is the Courthouse ?

That's right, kj ... take the angle of the bevel down to make the blade thinner/sharper. Thin equals less resistance but makes the edge more brittle. Depending on the type of wood you're carving your bevels may vary.

Here's a pic the GEC Courthouse Whittler ... it's a #62 pattern they released around 2011.

Thanks Don. I have a 3 blade #62 from 2012 but the blade arrangement is like a stockman, 2 blades at master end. It is called the "Maverick".

I received my '62' Carver today from gunstockjacks, great guy to do business with. And yes Roland mine isn't very sharp from the factory either. But it is a great little knife. I will probably admire it a while before working on the edge and useing it.

My Cocobola came today and it is amazing. Haven’t taken pictures yet, but I am blown away. This is the best one so far. Really nice. I still think GEC doesn’t get enough credit for the great job they do w/ wooden handles.

It is a bit odd. All of my previous GEC's from last few years have arrived with sharp edges. This 'carver' seems to have poorly sharpened edges even though the Wharncliffe is the easiest of all blade profiles to sharpen.

It’s been an hour and a half since TKC released their allotment of Cocobola 62 pocket carvers and they still have plenty. If you haven’t bought one of these in Cocobola, do yourself a favor and get one. Absolutely gorgeous.

Yesterday after the factory shut down announcement , I ordered a white bone #62 carver and a #38 bocote wood knife. I'll have plenty of time to save up for more #23 Trappers. Thirty-two workers are out of work.
