Look what I found

Post by Charlesk »

This weekend I found this Boker on the ground at my local dump. I want to restore this as much as possible. What would you suggest. I soaked the blades in vinegar.

Just not sure what steps to take. Also I know nothing about this knife. Any background would help.

Winner winner chicken dinner!!!

I’d clean up any rust with a #2 pencil, oil the blades, and put a drop of oil on the pivots. Sharpen it if it needs it and use the fool out if it.

Just my 2¢.

If the blades still snap open and closed well, it’s a great user. Böker made (and still makes) quality cutlery. That one looks like it’s seen very little use so if cared for properly and not mis-used it should last a lifetime, plus some. Oil the joints, learn how to properly sharpen it, and use it as a knife (it’s not a screwdriver, nor a hammer).

After reading a number of post and watching some videos this is my first attempt at cleaning up the knife.

I guess the deep pitting on the blade is probably something that can’t be reversed?

No sir it’s there to stay, and it adds character. A used knife will never look like a mint knife again. It’s a user, use it with pride!

It’s currently dripping wet with WD-40 I plan to finish off the cleaning tomorrow what type of dry lubricant would you use or do you suggest?

Many a knife has been ruined totally by someone trying to make it look new. An old used knife should look like an old used knife, and there’s nothing wrong with that at all. Like Wade said, carry and use it with pride. Those pits don’t hurt a thing when you’re using it. ::tu::

For dry lubricant/protectant I recommend Tuf-glide. Use as directed. Goes on wet, quickly dries leaving an invisible protectant coating bonded to the metal. viewtopic.php?f=4&t=68685&start=15#p862460

It looks like you did a nice job of cleaning it up! I personally prefer mineral oil or 3 in one oil to the joints and a light coat on the blades. Mineral oil is food safe...if you will be using it to cut food. ::tu:: ::tu:: ::tu::
