Info sought on this Queen 1980 LE Canoe

The Queen Cutlery Company manufactured knives in Titusville Pennsylvania for 96 years. The company opened its only factory there in 1919 and commenced to make some of the best US crafted cutlery you will find. Unfortunately, the Titusville manufacturing plant closed down in 2018.

Info sought on this Queen 1980 LE Canoe

Post by bhuber »

I picked this up recently and can’t find any info anywhere. Does anyone know if the handles are real or imitation stag and what the blade steel is? Is it rare? It has some of the stiffest backsprings I’ve ever encountered. The small blade is almost a nail breaker. I believe the green in the stag is rubbing compound that I’ve since cleaned out. I picked it over a Winterbottom canoe but may go back and pick that up.

I have no doubt that the stag is real, and considering India stag was still plentiful it probably is India stag.

I'm ready to bet 5 cents that its blades are 440A stainless like most of the 1980s stag Queens I've seen but test it. If the cold blue sold for guns will not discolor it then it is stainless. If the blade turns blue you can polish it off with a metal polish like Mother's Mag. A tiny drop applied with a toothpick in an inconspicuous spot will do. In knives with rounded bolsters when a blade is rotated 90 degrees from closed the portion of the tang that is covered by the end of the bolster when the blade is open is exposed. That's one spot to test.

It is a very nice looking Canoe. ::tu::

Thanks for all the info! I’ll probably go back for the other one. Is $30 a fair price on these to pay?

It is indeed a great book, but don’t think you’ll find anything as recent as 1980 in any of Sargent’s books.
