Anyone have "Short-Line Fever"? It's better than Covid-19

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

As posted on another thread, but requested here, this is a Camillus Scout Knife I got from Ray (one of our members) at a show he was at in Belton, TX. As you can see it has had some use and abuse, but I think it still has some life in it.

Have a short line Scribe it came with a little surface rust . Will clean it up later and put it in with the others after a little oil and Renaissance wax.
It’s held together with steel pins and has brass liners. Nice true half stop and almost full Scribe and don’t believe this one was used a lot . Another difference have noticed as get more into the Scribes is that Camillus has more of a tear drop shape and heavier than the New York knife Co. Scribes ,and believe better Quality . The frames and Scribe and Shank are thinner on the NYK s and first thought the frames from both companies are the same but don’t think so after looking at the ones here and a few others . Also as to the proper name for these Scribes there is some controversy . Some call them Race or Raze knifes . They are not a knife ,and some old time loggers that have talked to up North have said the term Raze in this case is from “erase” . The word got butchered over the years and got shorten to Raze. The Erase refers to when they used pencil or paint and a log thieve could erase that and put his mark on the logs in the holding pens waiting to be sent down River . No verification of this but find it interesting. So the Scriber would scribe deep marks so as not to be erased . So there’s a little info to go with a few pics . If anyone out there has any info on this subject and logging please send a pm or post here or in Timber Scribes thread if inclined.
Enjoy ,stay safe out there .

Another nice one you picked up JP. I have always heard them called timber scribes, and Race Knives. Most older carpenters I met over the years called them Timber Scribes, as they marked certain timber and lumber for particular placement as they cut them. Most old loggers and pulpwooders I have known called the Race or Raze knives. I always wondered if the "RAZE" was just an alternate pronunciation similar to how some older people I knew who used to pronounce the word sink as "Zink". Most old articles I've seen on them usually called them RACE Knives. Also thought you might find this interesting https://www.thehenryford.org/explore/bl ... ig-stories
