Silver Sword

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

After a quick check of the Camillus catalogs at Collectors Of Camillus: http://www.collectors-of-camillus.us/

I see them from about the mid 1980s to the mid 1990s.
They have 440 stainless steel blades and nickel silver pins & pivot pins.
From the pics in the catalogs it appears they had a wood inlay on must of them.
Yours may be an unfinished one from the Camillus auction that someone has covered with bone.

I have acquires several of the 800 series knives that had no outside handles, just the outside stainless liner. Actually I believe some of those were sold that way with an advertiser’s message engraved on the outside.

I think the price was in the #25-$30 range.

Hope this helps.

That helps a lot Orvet! Thank you. ::tu:: My Goins book doesn't have the Silver Sword tang stamp listed and the Camillus stamps led me to believe it was post 1976. Is there any way I can tell if the bone scales are original or not? I picked it up for $11.00 so I'm not going to get upset if the scales were added by someone. It's still a USA made Camillus and as such has value to me.

BTW, is there some kind of story behind the Silver Sword tang stamp? I knew that Camillus used the Sword Brand tang stamp but I hadn't seem them use the Silver Sword Stamp before.

I know I have posted info from Tom Williams as to the date when the Silver Sword line was introduced by Camillus but I cannot recall from memory, nor find the date in my notes. Perhaps someone remembers where I posted it. I think the brand was introduced well after WWII; the 1960s I think.

The Sword Brand was for the top quality Camillus knives and that brand was introduced in 1906. It only appeared on the finest knives Camillus made. Silver Sword did not have that same distinction.

I am sure your knife was rehandled after it left the factory. By the 1960s Camillus had switched almost entirely to the synthetic handles except for special issue or private brand knives, like those made for Remington. Being an inexpensive (but not cheap) knife made in the 1980s or 1990s, it would not have had bone handles from the factory.

Hope this helps,
Dale

Thanks Jerry! ::tu::
The Silver Sword brand was introduced later than I remembered.

Pretty scary when Jerry remembers better than I do! ::facepalm::

Thanks Dale and Jerry. The information helps a lot. I've been mostly a Case collector but I've got a lot of other knives accumulated over the years as well. I got a great knife history lesson here today. Thanks again! ::tu::

I know this is an old topic or thread. But, I don't believe in starting a new topic or thread every time a knife gets posted. This pocket knife arrived very recently in a large group of pocket knives that I bought. I did NOT buy the group to obtain this particular pocket knife. However, I was quite surprised and pleased that it was in the group. It is a CAMILLUS U.S.A., SILVER SWORD, pattern 822, two blades, two tang stamps, 2 9/16" closed, wood handles, pocket knife. The main blade tang stamp reads "SILVER SWORD" and has the crossed swords logo. The other tang stamp on the other side of the main blade reads "CAMILLUS - 822 - U.S.A." I believe the handles are ORIGINAL to the knife and are NOT replacements. It's in EXCELLENT condition and it did NOT require any cleaning at all. I took some pictures and here it is.
