Re: What is Your Latest Old Camillus? (pre-1960)
Received this one today. A Camillus 4 line tang stamp, Large Swell end Jack, with Jumbo Shield. It has Tip bolsters on the rear, with standard style bolsters on the front. It has metal liners with a brass blade well separator. It has black composite handles and is 4-3/8 inch closed. The knife has been cleaned, but not a good job. The blade wells are dirty inside, seems to have lint / dirt / grime buildup and blades although having snap are sluggish and feel gritty when opening. The blades are for the most part full and tang stamp is clear. No wobble, and handles are tight with just a minimum of shrinkage. I've already started doing the usual warm mineral oil bath, exercising the blades and a lot of black oil coming from between the springs and blades. Will let it soak overnight and do some cleaning tomorrow. From what I've been able to research, this one is pre 1940. Some of the other knife forums consensus is around 1938. From what I've found, this pattern with the Jumbo shield also came with colorful celluloid handles, and there was also one with Kent tang stamps and Kent on the shield. It's been raining today, so inside photos and my skills suck. But here are some photos.

Smitty ,that’s a nice 4 line, tipped Bolster Barlow. Really nice Shield , like the Jumbo . Is last pic a sellers pic? Re: What is Your Latest Old Camillus? (pre-1960)
Another addition to my Camillus family. Short Line Tang Stamp Camillus 72 3-5/8" closed Swell Center Carpenters Whittler (as Camillus Listed them). It has the Black Stagged composite handles which were produced without a shield. This one has great snap & no wobble on all blades, no abuse from improper sharpening, a minimum of shrinkage to the handles. I put this one between 1947 and 1954. The 1948 Camillus Catalogs show the 72 with no shield and black stagged handles. By 1954 the catalogs were showing the 72 With the federal style shield. By 1957 Camillus was listing the 72 with Brownstag handles which was the brown and some reddishbrown composite handles.

Yep....it is. This is my second short line, and I only have three Long Line Black handles with the Federal Shield. I have more browns, and the later double line browns. But I've seen a lot of long line blacks that the blades and handles were trashed.New_Windsor_NY wrote: ↑Wed Mar 31, 2021 1:28 am

Nice Short line Smitty.
Now that you guys brought up the black vs. brown had to look at what’s lying around here. And definitely more of the browns than black .
Dang it Smitty, just noticed that I don’t have a short line without shield, going to have to fix that .
Take care ,catch you later

Appreciate it Floyd. I know what you mean. I have a 72, a Craftsman, and a Ulster that are my most common EDC's to rotate. They are just great pocket pals.

This afternoon, this pocket knife joined my "general" CAMILLUS pocket knife collection. It is another 1959 CAMILLUS (my third), single blade, 3 tool pocket knife. It joins my three STEVENSON 45's, my CAMILLUS 1949, my CAMILLUS 1958, my other two CAMILLUS 1959's and my CAMILLUS 1960 MIL-K pattern pocket knives. It is in EXCELLENT condition and it didn't require any cleaning. I took some pictures and here it is.

Re: What is Your Latest Old Camillus? (pre-1960)
I added this one to my Camillus Pony Jack family today. It is a Camillus Sword Brand Pattern 21 Pony Jack. It is 2-13/16" closed with bone handles. Unfortunately the handles are cracked. The blades have no wobble with good snap, and positive half stops. It has the Sword Brand Crossed Swords tang stamp on the mark side of the Clip Blade and has The Four Line Camillus tang stamp on the pile side. I've not decided what I want to do with it, but may have the handles replaced and make a great old EDC Pony Jack. It needed some cleaning. Here are the pictures of it.
