Stainless Cutlery Co. New York City – Post Them If You Have Them

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

I still can't fathom how knives that are so much older than me can still look so much younger than me. ::shrug::
Maybe it's because they are unused, unlike me. ::tired::

The pictures are not computer enhanced. The yellow is even brighter more intense than the pictures show. I have never seen a knife handle with yellow this bright. Where are the others ?

3 1/4" Regular Jack although quite slim spring to top edge of liners so does not feel as heavy duty as most Regular Jacks. It is actually very nice, has a 'refined' look and feel, like "The Gent's Jack". Both blades marked: "Stainless/Cutlery Co./N.Y. City".

Just got this. What do you make of the "celluloid" scales?
They look transparent on the underlying green tarnish of brass liners.
You can see the transparency from the shadow thrown by the center pin and the shield.
Is celluloid ever transparent like clear acrylic? There seems to be no shrinkage at all.
Great snap with halfstops but the main blade sits a bit tight with point just above the liner.
Could this be a rehandle?
The tang stamp is repeated on the small blade with one shield stamp behind the main stamp.
Any date estimate?

If the above pen knife is 3 3/8" then it is the same pattern i posted on previous page with bright yellow handle.
The handles are original and have off gassed somewhat, but not enough to shrink ?
age is 1920's-'30's.

Edgewise I have several of there pen knives with celluloid covers but none with clear cell handles. The clear celluloid was usually over the top of an advertisement. I've seen that clear celluloid gas before.

Thanks for clearing that up guys. 3 3/8 exactly. The sellers picture didn't show the gassing out but he said it is celluloid. There may even be a thin shiny clear coat varnish covering the scales and bolsters but I can't be sure.
So now I have an interesting (gassing out ) conversation piece for $27.95 with kj's yellow one as the gold standard, and wondering where kj's knife spent the last century to end up in such pristine condition.

Stainless Cutlery Co. New York City – Post Them If You Have Them

Post by orvet »

Camillus made a plethora of knives for other companies and under other names. One name they use was Stainless Cutlery Co., New York City.
They aren't extremely common but they're not as scarce as hen's teeth either. I know there are a few posted here on AAPK but not very many.
If you have a knife stamped STAINLESS CUTLERY CO./NEW YORK CITY, please post it here so we can have them all in one thread.

Every once in a while I find an old Camillus with celluloid handles that just blow me away!
I found this one last month at the Oregon show. Stop thank you It is branded Stainless Cutlery Company.
Goins says Stainless Cutlery Co. was trademark used by Camillus from roughly 1924 to 1940.

This knife is at least 79 years old and the vibrant color is just amazing to me!
Obviously it was an ad knife for KITCHEN KLENZER which is hot stamped into the handle on the pile side.
The bar shield is very shiny and stamped STAINLESS STEEL. Both blades are stamped.
The master is stamped STAINLESS/CUTLERY CO./NEW YORK/CITY.
The pile side has a shield on the tang with the words STAINLESS/SHIELD.
The secondary blade is stamped on one side only; STAINLESS/CUTLERY CO./N. Y. CITY.
Even the bail has fancy sculpting around the ends for the pins go through.

I thought this was a very beautiful and well made knife, the fact that it was a giveaway, an ad knife, makes it even more spectacular in my opinion.

Hey Dale, I've got a few of the Stainless Cutlery Co. knives and I am amazed at the quality of them. I think perhaps Camillus put a little extra effort in to these knives in order to promote the new stainless blades.

I searched for a thread on Stainless Cutlery Co. before I started this new thread, but I couldn't find it with the search function. Maybe it is under another title? ::shrug::

Greg, those are amazing! I love the vivid color of that first knife you posted and that last one with the arrow shield!! All of the ones you posted are spectacular but those two are my favorites! ::drool::

Thanks for linking to the 'other' thread and for posting the pictures above. As we discussed in 'other' thread, Camillus made the "Stainless" knives to be top line knives. Interesting that most collectors were not aware of these knives until the last 5 or so years.
Merging would be good for future searches.

Okay, I believe I have successfully merged the two threads on Stainless Cutlery Co. They now appear to be under the title of the second thread that I started and they are located here in the Camillus Cutlery forum. It all has to do with the order in which I chose the topics, I think. Actually I've only merged topics once or twice before and it's been a long time.
I'm surprised it went so well!

Greg, I'm sorry but you'll have to set a new bookmark because the topic is no longer in the General Forum but in the Camillus Forum.

I have been a regular ebay 'searcher' since 2007. I did pick up a couple of Stainless Cutlery knives about 10 years ago but it is only in last 1-2 years that they show up on ebay a bit more frequently. And as Greg has said, most are unused. Where have they been hiding ? and where are the used examples ?
The usual answer would be that they have been in collections however most collectors have been unaware of this brand until recently.
