Camillus 72 Clones

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

Papa Bones wrote: Fri Jan 08, 2021 8:57 pm Well....this one finally arrived today. Me finding this one is a testament to the old saying of being in the right place at the right time. Or Even a blind hog finds an acorn once in a while. I actually snagged this off ebay. I have a saved search that I will enter, then after looking through I will refresh before I finish. This one popped up as a buy it now after the refresh. I am proud to add to my family of 72 Clones a Imperial swell center whittler with Boy Scouts Shield and Black scales. The scales do have some slight shrinkage, but are tight. It has the Boy Scouts Shield that seems to be inset or molded into the handles. Quite different from the way I've seen the other Boy Scout Shields in Camillus. The Main. and secondary Clip blades have great snap, and the coping blade has good snap, but not as strong as the others. No wobble, and does need a good oil bath. The blades do have some of the factory luster, but have many spiders, spots and stains. The tang stamp has "Imperial PROV. U.S.A. I do believe this one was neglected and lay in a drawer, box or closet for a long time. I have only oiled the joints, I plan on doing a light cleaning and a warm oil bath.
Man that's a nice one Smitty! I'm kind of an Imperial fan. Although I don't really know exactly why. Just like them for some reason. Add the 72 pattern, a long pull and a BSA shield and I'm all eyes! Congrats on the nice score! ::handshake:: ::nod::

Finally adding this one to my 72 Clone family after a long delay due to the postal service. Actually purchased this back in December.

An Olsen OK Swell center whittler, pattern 107. It has the Olsen OK brass oval shield, and the Tang stamp on the main clip blade is Olsen OK, H.C., M.I. U.S.A 107. The blades have some of the original luster, but do have stains, spotting, spiders, with a some scratches. I have oiled and exercised the blades with Tuff Glide, and The Secondary Clip blade & Coping Blade have excellant snap now. The Main Clip blade has decent snap, but is not smooth. I am getting a lot of black sediment out of the wells after exercising the blades. I plan on giving it a warm oil bath and working the blades some more to see if it improves. The Delrin handles are tight with no cracks, with very little shrinkage

This came in today. Another addition to my Camillus 72 Clone family. It is a Olsen Knife Company 3-5/8" Carpenters Whittler made in Solingen Germany. In the Olsen Catalogs it was listed as a No.13 Carpenters Knife. It has bone handles, nickle silver bolsters, brass liners, steel pins, and a Federal Style shield. This one was really dirty inside and blades were stiff. I did some cleanup on it, and a warm oil bath. Blades have great snap, no wobble, but do have some pitting, stains, and spiders. The secondary clip blade is missing the tip. From my research, in the early 1960's Olsen outsourced some of it's knives from Solingen Germany. These had the bone handles and federal shield up to 1970. After that they were outsourced from Camillus and they had a silver line and a gold shield line that had the oval shield with Olsen Ok stamped on it, and the Olsen Ok tang stamp. So this dates this knife from the 1960's no later than 1970.

Thanks Skip, but I don't know about that unstoppable force part. ::super_happy:: According to the info I found, the one I posted before this one was from the Olsen Golden Shield line and was made by Schrade not Camillus.

I added these two 72 Clones to the family today. They were inexpensive knives that had several issues, but one is a fairly hard knife (I feel) that I've not seen pop up very often. Both will make good fillers until better comes along.

First is a Imperial Hammer Brand Swell Center Whittler. The Tang Stamp with the U.S.A. dates this knife in the range of 1945-1955. The knife had some rust on the blades & in the well, The blades do have wear, and some pitting. The Handles do show some shrinkage and is missing the shield. I had to do some cleaning, hot oil bath, tuff glide exercising, and did do some polishing with some case paste. Thankfully all the blades did come back to life and actually have real good snap. I was really impressed considering the way it looked.

Here is what it looks like now.
Hammer Brand Swell Center Whit_a.png
Hammer Brand Swell Center Whit_b.png
Hammer Brand Swell Center Whit_c.png
I also added another Craftsman 9494. This one is the variation with the lighter colored handles. I've always thought it looked more like a peanut shell. This one was about in as bad as shape as the Hammer Brand. Not quite as much rust, but you can see that the blades have been abused with some grinder marks. But I gave it the same treatment, and the Master Clip, and the coping blade have great snap. The secondary clip has weak snap. The blade wells were gunky with crud and built up lint and looked like some dirt added for good measure. But I believe it cleaned up well, and I love this handle variation / color. As I said, will make a good filler until I can find one better.
Here is how she looks.

Added this one to my 72 Clone family today. It is a Imperial Boy Scout Swell Center Whittler, with black handles, metal Boy Scout Shield, and Has the tang stamp IMPERIAL over PROV R.I. which dates this knife in the 1936-1952 year range, but I am sure this one is probably from the 50's. This is my second Imperial Scout Whittler 72 clone, but the other one is a later date tang stamp.

This one was pretty cruddy, and needed some TLC which included cleaning, oiling and some polishing. It has scratches, and had some light rust inside the wells and on the coping blade. Also, the blades were not smooth in operation. As you can tell, at some time in it's life, a prior owner must have confused a grinder for a whit rock. Now, The Master Clip has good snap, the secondary clip and coping blade have great snap, but the coping blade does have a little looseness side to side. The coping blade also has some pitting. I still need to do a little more work on the blades. But I am pleased the way it turned out so far.

Here are some before and after shots.

Added another one today. Although technically a 72 is has the blade etch "Yellow Jacket" with the Yellow Jacket Wasp which also makes it a variation. This one as you can see has the Double Line Camillus tang stamp with the matching Double Line Camillus Shield. This one is like new with All blades having smooth tight movement, with no wobble, excellent snap, and have the original factory grind & hone marks and has not been put against a stone since purchased. The blade etch is clear and bold. The blade well is clean and free of any rust. The bolsters do have some light scratches or rubs, but is not distracting and I believe a little case paste will clean them right up.

This is my second 72 Yellow Jacket, but this one is in much better shape than my first and the blade etch is way more bold. Here are the pictures right after I took it out of the mailer. All I've done is wiped it with a case chamois .
