Camillus 72 Clones

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

I added these two 72 Clones to the family today. They were inexpensive knives that had several issues, but one is a fairly hard knife (I feel) that I've not seen pop up very often. Both will make good fillers until better comes along.

First is a Imperial Hammer Brand Swell Center Whittler. The Tang Stamp with the U.S.A. dates this knife in the range of 1945-1955. The knife had some rust on the blades & in the well, The blades do have wear, and some pitting. The Handles do show some shrinkage and is missing the shield. I had to do some cleaning, hot oil bath, tuff glide exercising, and did do some polishing with some case paste. Thankfully all the blades did come back to life and actually have real good snap. I was really impressed considering the way it looked.

Here is what it looks like now.

I also added another Craftsman 9494. This one is the variation with the lighter colored handles. I've always thought it looked more like a peanut shell. This one was about in as bad as shape as the Hammer Brand. Not quite as much rust, but you can see that the blades have been abused with some grinder marks. But I gave it the same treatment, and the Master Clip, and the coping blade have great snap. The secondary clip has weak snap. The blade wells were gunky with crud and built up lint and looked like some dirt added for good measure. But I believe it cleaned up well, and I love this handle variation / color. As I said, will make a good filler until I can find one better.
Here is how she looks.

Added this one to my 72 Clone family today. It is a Imperial Boy Scout Swell Center Whittler, with black handles, metal Boy Scout Shield, and Has the tang stamp IMPERIAL over PROV R.I. which dates this knife in the 1936-1952 year range, but I am sure this one is probably from the 50's. This is my second Imperial Scout Whittler 72 clone, but the other one is a later date tang stamp.

This one was pretty cruddy, and needed some TLC which included cleaning, oiling and some polishing. It has scratches, and had some light rust inside the wells and on the coping blade. Also, the blades were not smooth in operation. As you can tell, at some time in it's life, a prior owner must have confused a grinder for a whit rock. Now, The Master Clip has good snap, the secondary clip and coping blade have great snap, but the coping blade does have a little looseness side to side. The coping blade also has some pitting. I still need to do a little more work on the blades. But I am pleased the way it turned out so far.

Here are some before and after shots.

Added another one today. Although technically a 72 is has the blade etch "Yellow Jacket" with the Yellow Jacket Wasp which also makes it a variation. This one as you can see has the Double Line Camillus tang stamp with the matching Double Line Camillus Shield. This one is like new with All blades having smooth tight movement, with no wobble, excellent snap, and have the original factory grind & hone marks and has not been put against a stone since purchased. The blade etch is clear and bold. The blade well is clean and free of any rust. The bolsters do have some light scratches or rubs, but is not distracting and I believe a little case paste will clean them right up.

This is my second 72 Yellow Jacket, but this one is in much better shape than my first and the blade etch is way more bold. Here are the pictures right after I took it out of the mailer. All I've done is wiped it with a case chamois .

Today this became the latest addition to my CAMILLUS 72 variation/clone collection. It's a HAMMER BRAND, 3 blades, swelled center, 3 5/8" closed, "whittler" pocket knife. I gave it a minor cleaning, I took some pictures and here it is.

Hi Grant. I saw that. I have a CAMILLUS 72 variation, the whole pocket knife,
not just the scales. It has the exact same shield.I believe that mine is from
China or Pakistan. The one on eBay looks like a CATTARAUGUS pocket knife
with the China or Pakistan scales attached. But I'm not sure that all 3 of the
CATTARAUGUS stamped blades belong to that particular pocket knife. I have
no problems with it at all. A nice looking conversation piece.

Today I add this CAMILLUS 72 variation to my collection. It's another CRAFTSMAN, 3 blade, swelled center, 3 5/8" closed, "whittler" pocket knife. It isn't stamped or marked with a pattern # (9494), but it is. I gave it a minor cleaning, took some pictures and here it is.
