Camillus Split Spring Whittler Pocket Knife

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

Very nice Skip. Those are seen far and between for sure, especially with bone. Usually more worn and for some reason the file usually in rough shape.Great find. ::tu::

Finally got a Whittler made by Camillus with the split or wedge in the back springs. They were in a lot that had won and they are part of the reason for buying the lot which I usually don’t do. Wasn’t any pics of back springs so wow, what a surprise. One is a sword brand stamped main and 4 line stamp on the other 2 . Brass liners wedge and pins with half stop on the small clip and pen . The 4 line has the milled steel liners, pins ,wedge, shield. Also half stops on the small clip and pen. No model # on either. They are both 3 and 5/8 inches long with swell center. Will be toting these for a few ,they have strong snap yet all the way around. Even with the use they have had they are solid knives, very well built.

Awesome find JP. Beautiful knives especially for their age. The black handles were Model 248. There was also a Stag handle version that was Model 247. Two very nice additions to your Camillus / Sword Brand family. ::tu:: ::tu::

This morning, my trip to the post office produced this pocket knife. It is the latest example to join this topic or thread and to join my general CAMILLUS collection. It is a CAMILLUS, three blades (one has a file), 3 5/16" closed, one tang stamp, milled liners, "split spring", whittler pocket knife. Only the main blade has a tang stamp. It is a four line tang stamp. It says "CAMILLUS (over) CUTLERY CO. (over) CAMILLUS N.Y. (over) U.S.A." If there were tang stamps on the other two blades, they are not there now. Overall, I'd say that this pocket knife is in VERY GOOD condition. All three blades have good snap. ALL three blades have no wobble. The main blade has no half stop. The other two blades have good half stops. I gave it a minor cleaning. I took some pictures and here it is.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
I would call this a "split back whittler".
A "split spring whittler" has one spring that is split with a spacer. These are extremely rare.
This knife has two springs with a spacer.

I know it's NOT a true split spring.
You go right ahead and call it a "split back whittler."

I do not know what material the handles are made of.
I'm pretty sure that they are not celluloid.
I'm pretty sure that they are not a natural material.
