What is Your Latest Old Schrade?

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Thanks guys, I was pretty happy to put this set together. Bonus is both knives came from members here, Roger for the single blade and Cal for the double.

I bought a lot of four US, German, and Japanese-made users/HOKs for $12 shipped for this knife.

I believe it to be an early 1950s 725 in Propwood.

Nice score! I think what you have there is the 766 which was offered with black celluloid handles. That one can be found on page 12 of the 1953 catalog. The propwood was a natural brown wood colored handle.

Nice Find and Purchase ::tu::

I'm not great at posting pics but here are couple of examples - one of 766 and the other 832 which I would say is Propwood handle -- Clint

I just got another one of the "Schrade - N.Y. - U.S.A." (type 1) tang stamped 34OT Old Timers in my hands. These have the model number stamped on the opposite side of the tang (Just like the Schrade - Walden tang stamps had).
I have 3 of these now. I think they are really cool. These are the first gen of tang stamps right after "Walden" was dropped from the tang stamps on the Old Timer line.
I have found this type of tang stamp on the 34OT and the 8OT.....

Nice Knives Mike - I'm curious and know you have alot of knowledge concerning Schrade - Are you saying there is a specific date range after "walden" was dropped that N.Y. with model number on back was used - I have open stock knives with N.Y. model on front and some model on back , is there difference in those as well - from tang stamp references it says NY and just usa is 73-2004 but always wondered why 2 different stamps for same range -- but it is Schrade ?

From what I have been able to figure out pertains only to Old Timers. I am not sure if this same practice was used for any other Schrade lines.....

The older Schrade - Walden practice was to stamp the company information on the mark side of the tang on the main blade. I guess, that way, when a folder was opened, you saw the knife maker's name. Then on the pile side of the tang, they stamped the model number.....

Schrade - Walden....
34 OT first model Schrade Walden.jpg

Then, when Schrade dropped the Walden name from their company, my theory is, they used the same format for the earliest Old Timers. Therefore, you see the Schrade, N.Y., U.S.A. pile side stamp without the "WALDEN" in the middle.

Schrade, NY, USA....
34 OT Schrade NY USA TYPE 1_2.jpg

I have no idea how long they used this practice but, I have only seen a very few of the above tang stamp. After that, they went to the tang stamp that had the model number on the same side as the manufacturer name.

Schrade, N.Y., U.S.A., 34OT.....
Schrade NY USA 2a.jpg

Maybe other experts can put dates to these changes.....

This discussion probably should be on another thread - but I don't know how to change

I've also (as stated before) theorized that the NY USA was generally earlier than the "U.S.A." only stamp.

I can't see why it would only pertain to OLD TIMERS as they were producing open stock knives at the same time

I might see if any correlation to model number - ETC -- might take awhile

I went through 27 schrade ny usa open stock knives - 16 had model number on front - 11 on back - for what it's worth

I believe from 1970 to 1973, Schrade had large numbers of old blades in stock - this was also the same time Schrade was changing their knife names [U.H. etc], factory setup and dies for stamping blades. Ken. ::dang:: ::hmm::
