I got this Schrade-Walden 897 Uncle Henry in today.
Looks like SN 15563......
It looks pretty nice. Almost looks unused.

Back when the Uncle Henry's were 1st marketed, weren't they guaranteed against loss for a year or some such? The serial number would be a way to prove ownership if you made a claim.Meridian_Mike wrote: ↑Wed Sep 29, 2021 8:06 pm I got this Schrade-Walden 897 Uncle Henry in today.

I'm not sure of the age of this one. I have 2 - UHs that the SN starts with a "0" so maybe this one is 2nd or 3rd year (?).

Thanks Smitty!
There is another thread I need to locate that deals with the 127 UH and serial numbering.
Here is a catalog shot from the 1967 Schrade catalog.... With the first Uncle Henry, the 897 UH....
Then, the next year, in 1968, the 127 UH was added to the Uncle Henry line-up.
Then in 1969, the Uncle Henry line really picked up steam.
1973 Was the last Year of the Schrade - Walden Uncle Henrys.....
After that, Schrade dropped the Walden Name.

There is one more I am thinking of where Cal was pointing out some of the physical features of the covers and other small things associated with the VERY FIRST 127 UH knives. If I remember correctly (and that is hard for me to do sometimes ) we were discussing the thickness of the first uncle Henry Covers.

I don't have a pic handy of the first UH hunters with the thick covers but here is a pic of the first 'scrim' hunters, which also had the thick covers.Meridian_Mike wrote: ↑Mon Oct 04, 2021 11:38 am There is one more I am thinking of where Cal was pointing out some of the physical features of the covers and other small things associated with the VERY FIRST 127 UH knives. Oh man.... Nice finds Cal.
I am going to have to start paying more attention to my knives! I had no idea the first Scrims had thicker covers.

Re: My latest Schrade
I landed another 123OT from the bay....
It showed up today. There is a little rust on the blade near the tang but I can see the original mill marks on the blade.
It is tarnished but has never been sharpened.
I REALLY love the size and shape of this knife.... It's a miniature version of the folding hunter.....SO COOL.

Re: My latest Schrade
Mike, you now have two 123OT knives ? Wow, they are a bit rare and so nice in hand it's hard to understand why they were not a good seller.
Approximately what is the price range for a good but not mint 123OT ?

I like those, too, Mike. Do you have a little batch of blade blanks for them? But maybe the stainless ones? Just curious.

Actually, I have 3 of those now. I just stumbled over this newest one last week on the bay no bidders. I snagged it in the last seconds for the win!kootenay joe wrote: ↑Wed Oct 06, 2021 12:21 am Mike, you now have two 123OT knives ? I am not sure what the value is for these BUT.... I would think the value should be in $100 range since they are just not out there. (Maybe more to someone who wants one to complete their collection....???)
It would be nice to know the production numbers for this guy!!
Yes, I do have a batch of the carbon steel blades. I have some liners too. I plan to put together some bone versions of this knife IF I ever get a chance to get back in my shop. The grand kids are taking up my weekend time right now.....tongueriver wrote: ↑Wed Oct 06, 2021 1:15 am I like those, too, Mike. Do you have a little batch of blade blanks for them? I have a few of the SC524 blades (same as the 123OT but the Uncle Henry version)... They are stainless.

I think one of the bone Statue of Liberty knives, rebladed with a plain non-stainless blade would be nice. I watch for an inexpensive example so that could maybe be done in the future. I gave my Wife the sterling version and gold version several years ago. Those gold ones are QUITE rare.

Hmmmmmm...... that is nice to know Cal.
I see there is a couple of the silver versions on the bay right now.
Here is a pic of one I have....
It was loose (no display box) and has a chip out of the bone on the pile side but otherwise a nice knife.

Nice. I like the knives but not crazy about the etched stainless blades (I mean user-wise; I do like to safequeen the real deal).Meridian_Mike wrote: ↑Wed Oct 06, 2021 1:06 pm Hmmmmmm...... that is nice to know Cal.

I think I showed this one somewhere here before. This fellow took a 123OT and put micarta handles on it. Then he got the brass linerlock out of a full-size 125OT hunter, cut it down, and stuffed it in there. This is a great user!

Re: My latest Schrade
That is a nice looking knife! Very interesting idea to cut down the 125OT liner lock.
I have parts I found on the bay for patterns for each of the parts of the 123OT (less the spring).
I also have the pieces (less the spring) to put together a BLANK version of the SC524.....
NOW.... my kingdom for a little shop time.....LOL.

In the mail (I hope), a daddy barlow. I am somewhat familiar with Herman Williams and own many of his knives. I am pretty sure this is his work before he started stamping the tangs. And I own another knife (an IXL/Schrade giant stockman with identical stag, which Herman told me he "thought I did it, but not sure.").
