Schrade 4" knives - Post them here.

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Mustanger wrote:I picked up this grundgy 99P early this month and have been working off and on trying to clean it up. I had to send off for some 40 grit sanding discs for my Dremel tool just to grind down to something shiny. Chunks of rust and black stuff on the inside and the joints were almost seized up. Worst blades I've ever dealt with. I'd need a belt sander to even come close to getting those deep blemishes out. Too much metal to remove. The 'cool' factor and rarity of the 99P made me buy it anyway. Yours is a beauty!

I only found the 99P in catalogs and price lists from 1960 to 1965. I don't have access to 1966 and I didn't find them later. So, 6 or 7 years? My earliest knowledge of this pattern is from the Schrade Cut Co catalog of 1936, #8814. They came in different colors, including yellow.
Your 99P is looking a lot better in the after pics. ::tu:: I've got a soft spot for obliques but man are they tough to find. In the 50's Ulster was making the Primble 5371 and Keen Kutter K323 and their popularity inspired the 99P, which strikes me as backwards somehow. When you line them up and start comparing the knives the Primble and 99 have some differences. The shape and thickness of the springs are different with the Primble being nearly identical to the Ulster 98 and the 99 almost identical to the later Buck 301s.

Here's a group pic. I'm still searching for that Keen Kutter.

Top to bottom: SO8814, Primble 5371, 99P, 99P, 1966 Buck 301, 1967-1971 Buck 301

One of my very favorite knives that enamores me every time I look at it. The red peachseed is very pretty. Build quality and condition is top tier. Just a great 4'' stockman.

Hah, I'm afraid to handle it too much. I don't look at it real often but now I have some decent pictures to look at.

Fished this Schrade Walden 804 whittler out the bay recently. It is certainly a big old knife. Was this one also called a Mechanic's Knife?

Yes, Camillus DID make them for Schrade. A few patterns actually, but I think it was between the two bankruptcies, Schrade's and certainly before the Camillus bankruptcy. I am just not sure. They are every equal of anything coming out of the Schrade buildings. By the last decade of Schrade, Camillus and Imperial were just as much a part of the 'Schrade' output as Schrade itself. I think.

I got this one earlier in the week. Nice original, clean and minty 1950's 881, with factory edges. Match striker pull with peachseed bone is not a real common combination on these. I am liking this one a lot.
