Cut 8813 SS. The spring for the main blade has a crack in it right by the pin but still snaps ok and functions, at least until it doesn't. Other than that it's decent besides all the scratches. The small blades snap nice and hard.

I wanted to show this one (probably again?) because of some unusual characteristics. I believe it to be one of the very first 8OTs ever made. It has milled liners and the shield appears to be a prototypical shield that never was adopted in the final decision to run the bone 8OTs, which are generally assumed to be confined to the 1959-1961 period.

How about a peachseed 880
Anyone who has handled these will know how much of a chunk of steel the main blade is. It makes the saber ground buck 301 seem like a little toy blade. (Not that either of them cut worth a flip, but they look good).

Yes, they DO look good. I wouldn't have minded picking up that last spendy one on the Bay.

Hi Cal, The first 8 OT is listed in the 1960 price list. Photos of the very early knives had that shield.tongueriver wrote:I wanted to show this one (probably again?) because of some unusual characteristics. Hawk has a mint early 8 OT in the original box, with all the bling [early shield]
A New Zealand collector, sold an early Black 8 OT, with a larger shield [in brass]
Most of the 2 OT's and some of the very early 8 OT's, had the milled liners.
My 8 OT is a later version, shown in the wrong box.
The Black very early 8 OT, looks to have the same size shield, as the First Buck Stockman [made by Schrade in 1966]..Ken

Nice ones Ken. I always enjoy your fine collection of schrades. I've looked for one of those black 8ot's but have never seen one besides yours.
I think I've shown pretty much all of my old four inchers. Here's my early walden again, showing all the blades.
I keep these two in a cedar box on a shelf amongst other schrades of similar condition, so I can get at 'em easy and put in my pocket. The bottom 881 has nickel silver liners and pins, the first I've seen like that. I prefer nickel silver liners to brass so I really like that one.
Well, so do you.jxr1197 wrote:you guys got some rare birds on display.

It's the clip blade that has me thinking Ulster, it's the same as the 98. During that time Ulster was also making the 934 but I think the 933 was always Schrade. I have one of the Delrin 935s (but not the match strike - those two you have there are nice!) and that one's a Schrade too.koldgold wrote:I have never seen one of those Primble 935 Ulster knives.

As long as I'm here....
Early 8OT oddity. This is one of the experimental plastics. Under a magnifying glass it comes alive - the brown plastic is filled with gold and copper flake. I like the brass shield too.

I have a 933 made by Schrade also.
I think that 8 OT was made about 1961-62 and called "Meerschaum Bone".

I used to have one of those with the gold flake embedded in the (whatever!) but I sold it to someone here; I don't remember who. Eric has said that in the 1958-1959 range they were experimenting with handle material in the wake of the loss of a reliable bone supply. Meanwhile, remember that Schrade also moved into the Ulster buildings about this time so from that time on Ulster and Schrade were joined at the hip in almost every way.
Re: Schrade 4" knives - Post them here.
Ken it's amazing how many of those old beauties you have in the box with all the bling! I've seen pictures of just a couple other 8OTs with that sparkly brown plastic and somewhere in my pile I have a Primble 934 covered in that too. The meerschaum bone term has always been hazy to me. It's been used in catalog descriptions for delrin knives too so I thought it was a reference to color - like an old meerschaum pipe.
Cal that was me - that's your old knife in the pic!tongueriver wrote:I sold it to someone here; I don't remember who.

Yeah; I think their 'meerschaum bone' was marketing playing around and trying to come up with something in that transitional era. Could describe anything EXCEPT bone.

^^Sweet Muskrat^^
8OTGB & 8OTRB - Not a catalog item. I've been told these were assembled in the 90s to use up old Heritage parts. Seems about right.
