Those hard to find Old Timers

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Those knives don't have a "Y" stamped at the end of the "8OT"...

The "Y" just stands for the yellow covers. It is just a way to distinguish between the regular issue.

They made thousands of Ulster 580T with delrin handles and only a limited number with bone handles in the first years of production.

Not a knife that will let you retire.....sorry.

Those 58OTs were made by Ulster and were available through the Prince Albert tobacco offer.

I'm not sure how many were produced..... by many thousand I would imagine.

Here's another hard to find Old Timer. This 8OT has the smooth brown plastic handles with gold and copper flake that can be traced back to around 1961. It was an experiment in the bone to Delrin transition era. I don't know if they ever sold these smooth plastic knives but they pop up once in a while, mostly on 58OTs. It was also used on the 50OTs and on some 8OTs. I bought one of the 8OTs and then recently got a 2nd one. The second one is in the pic below and the strange thing about it is it's stamped like you'd expect on a 1961 8OT but it's an Ulster. The clip and spey are both different from it's Schrade counterpart. I chalked it up to random hijinks at the factory but then I spotted another Ulster 8OT with the same scales. That knife is sitting on Ebay right now but there's nothing in the description to give it away. It's one of those rare birds you can only spot if you look at all the pics and ignore everything the seller says. I'll be really impressed if someone here finds it!

Yep, the rare birds are flying...

BUT, like you say, some were just factory hijinks.... LOL

Thanks Jason...... for putting me on this smooth plastic, "experimental", cover material knife. You are right.... you have to be a real sleuth to find some of these ODD Old Timers.
Now I have this one for my collection.
Here it is after a quick clean-up. It has the SCHRADE WALDEN NY USA tang stamp and it does not have an "8OT" stamp on the opposite side of the main blade tang. Another anomaly I suppose.

Here she is.....

There is a split due to shrinking on the pile side cover. Oh well, I am just glad to have this guy!

I'm glad to see you ended up with that knife! I have the same one with the same Ulster clip and it also doesn't have a pattern number on it. I have another with a Schrade clip and that one does have the 8OT stamp on the back. The handles are embedded with a ton of gold and copper flake but you can't see it unless you have a really bright light and a strong magnifying glass.

Jason, how did you ever find the 3OT ?
I once read that there are only about 10 of these in existence.

This 3OT was on display at the factory and was sold at the bk sale along with the rest of the display knives to SMKW. It has passed through a couple of collectors' hands before winding up with me recently. I also got the 2OT it was paired up with along with the plaques and associated paperwork. Herman Williams said he thought there were a dozen of them made and I also read somewhere that LT put the number at around 25. Two reliable sources quoting very low, and very similar figures so I have no doubt there were somewhere between 10-25 of these made. I have never found a photo of another one and I searched and searched so as far as I can tell this is the only one that the collecting community knows the whereabouts of.

Although not nearly as rare as the ones above, I got myself another hard to find Old Timer.

A 34OTY.....
Made only one year... 1990.
It is not perfect but looks almost unused.
I have 2 of these now. I was glad to find this one a reasonable price!
