Those hard to find Old Timers

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Good snag Jason.....
I think I might have been the other bidder on that one. I had NO IDEA it was a bone handled 8OT.... I just put my bid in based on the tang stamp alone.
Good catch dude!

I got myself this here 51 OT...Not really that rare but not that cheap when you do find one. This one looks unused so this one is going in my collection display.

Betcha never let that happen again ::tu:: . It was the price that caught my eye. They were asking just a little too much for a clean Delrin knife. I clicked on it to see what the story was. Turns out the seller didn't know what he had and just pulled a number out of thin air when pricing it. I take no credit being a super sleuth - it was dumb luck.

Those damaged brown plastic handles I posted in this thread the other day came off of a 50OT - but I didn't include a pic of what became of the knife...it looks right at home wearing saw cut bone -

After reading about the bone 8OT find, i did go to ebay, and i found an 8OT. With yellow handles for $9.50 !
Not quite as special as the bone one
It is marked "8OT", not "8OTY", "Y" for yellow.
And i think a bunch of these showed up soon after Schrade closed and were likely made in Camillus factory using left over Schrade blades.
Any opinions about my GREAT score :?

Thanks. The chart is useful for correct' knives. This one is marked Schrade/USA 8OT. There is no "Y".
I vaguely recall a discussion of these in Schrade/BF about 12 ? years ago and the thought was that some of the yellow 8OT's were made with 8OT blades, not the blade marked "8OTY".
Or, it could be an end of days knife ?
And, i think some yellow Schrade 8OT's were made or assembled in Camillus factory right after Schrade closed.
Plus, after Schrade closed, yellow handled 8OT's from China showed up and they were marked "8OTY".
There is more than 1 possibility for the origin of this knife which is why i bid for it. I was hoping 'you guys' might know how to sort out the yellow handles and absent "Y" on this 'Schrade' knife.

Have you seen an 8OTY tang stamp? I was looking at this post and can't remember ever coming across one. I've got the same 8OTY with the regular 8OT stamp and 'SCHRADE' marked federal shield. I've seen '8OTY' boxes but never the stamp and the only 8OTYs I have seen with Old Timer shields are Chinese. A quick google search didn't show an image of the 8OTY stamp. I think your knife is correct, but now I'm curious - does anyone here have a pic of a 'Y' tang stamp?

I just thought the "Y" was just to distinguish the description from the regular 8OT on a sales sheet or the box it came in..... I haven't ever seen one that had the "Y" on the tang stamp.
If they are out there.... let's see one.

Since it was only made in 1990 it could be possible that they were using up old parts. The 881Y was last seen in 1986. Maybe someone noticed a dust covered crate in a forgotten corner filled with yellow scales. *If* it was a run to use up old stock it could make sense if they didn't make a stamp for it. Clemente is vague on the pattern (I happen to have his book on my desk as I'm typing this.)

Yep, I have read this somewhere else, IIRC.... That Schrade was trying to use up some old stock yellow handle covers on the Old Timer line.
The 881Y does have the "Y" on the tang stamp.
But.... just printing a piece of paper with the 8OTY would be a lot less costly that making up a tang stamp for the 8OT. That is a good hint that the 8OTY was just an attempt to use up the over-run of yellow handles.
.
NOW.... what about the 34OTY.... What is the Schrade equivalent of that pattern.
Did the same thing happen (cease of production) for a smaller Schrade yellow handle stockman knife?
.
After all..... The 8OTY and 34OTY were both one-year knives.....

The 834Y and 835Y both had pretty long runs and I think would be the same size. I don't know if I've ever seen a 34OTY - is it also missing the 'Y'?

This seems to be the typical configuration for the 34OTY.... It has the oval Schrade shield.

Thanks for these posts about the Schrade USA "Y" knives. I now realize my confusion about how these yellow Delrin knives are marked is not my 'old timer's disease' but is because no one is certain if any of these USA 8OT's were marked "8OTY".

Weird, right? I've only seen one other one. Imperial had a short, and pretty much forgotten cameo in the Prince Albert offer. The knife is one thing but it's even trippier seeing the tin.

I almost won this one yesterday. Had meant to put a larger bid in, since I thought it ended today, NOT last night. Went just $4, and at $35, was still affordable. I sure hope someone here got it. Has to be a 1 of 1.

It's a prototype made for the Skoal promo, a one-spring knife, using a 34OT main blade, and a small clip point blade from a 44OT Workmate. That blade has been scalloped/serrated.

Seller's description. Didn't ask, but they may be a former Schrade employee, possibly in sales. Two production models were listed as being "from their sample roll".
As far as I know there is only one of these!! This knife was made as a sample prototype for the Skoal Smokeless Tobacco Division of US Tobacco. It's unique in that there are two tang stamps 34OT and 44OT. This makes sense as Schrade would have used blades they had on hand for the prototype, a 34OT blade from an Old Timer "Middleman" and a modified 44OT Old Timer "Workmate" blade.

In the 90's Schrade produced literally thousands of pocket knives for promotional use by US Tobacco for both the Copenhagen and Skoal brands of smokeless tobacco. The brand managers were always looking for new blade configurations and this was one of them. As far as I know, this one never went into production. It features green saw cut Delrin handles, mirror polished brass bolsters, 1095 high carbon steel blades, antique brass Skoal handle shield and solid brass linings.
