Scharde USA 165 age
Scharde USA 165 age
I cant seem to find the tang stamp info on this model 165. I would like to know the approx. age of it. Thanks in advance. Tang stamp is "SCHRADE, U.S.A. 165" with Old Timer on the handle, has a two piece brass guard. 5 1/4" blade of carbon steel. and well made leather sheath.

Dale's chart suggests your knife was made from 1973 to 1991.

thanks tr, I read that but I wonder if fixed blades are different than folders? The guy claims he bought it in 1960. Maybe he has crs!

He could not have bought that knife any earlier than the second half of the year 1973.

I agree its after 73 as the stamp included WALDEN prior to then.

Terry, it is possible that he bought that same pattern as early as 1967, but the tang stamp would've been different, like one of mine that is: SCHRADE/WALDEN/165. But the knife in the OP would have been made after mid-1973, because that is when they change the tang stamp from Schrade-Walden to Schrade.terryl308 wrote:thanks tr, I read that but I wonder if fixed blades are different than folders? The 165OT pattern first appeared in the 1967 catalog and made his last appearance in the 1991 catalog. Where there some sold before 1967? Probably, at least sales would've had samples possibly even up to a year before hand but I doubt he would've gotten it seven years prior to the knife becoming a catalog item.
I hope this clarifies things a little bit.

Thanks dale, It could be the guy that owns the knife might have a "memory lapse". I try to be kind to a fellow ole guy and tell them what I've found out about their family treasure. I told him about the tang stamp change and he finally admitted it could have been in 1973. Thanks again I enjoy researching local knives for the coffee shop crowd. Terry
