Anybody know why Schrade made a 12OT (Green)?

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Anybody know why Schrade made a 12OT (Green)?

Post by Meridian_Mike »

I have seen a few of these on the bay. I decided I needed one for my collection. I got this 12OT with green covers in today.
I was wondering why Schrade made these in 2 different handle colors.....
The regular brown and this dark green color.
Did this knife have a special release purpose?
Was it included in some sort of a deal?
.
Just wondering..... I know some of you guys are bound to know.

Here is my 12OTG...

This inquiring mind wants to know.....LOL

I believe the green covers were developed as part of the Ducks Unlimited Series that Schrade did. They typically were etched Ducks Unlimited and had a Greenwing Shield. It may be that they were using up the covers and offering them without the DU etching and Greenwing Shields

That would be my guess. I believe they also mad an offering of pocket knives for LL Bean, however, I don't remember off the top of my head if it was the same green

I will need to refer to my Schrade files to see if I can come up with the correct answer and also dig out some of those green Schrades I have

Thanks for the good start Tom.
All that makes sense. I figured they must have been part of a special series or something.
Yes, more please if you can find it....

I have found my Green Schrade 12 OT, 36 OT and also a 5 OT Lockback.

There is nothing in my files to indicate anything special about the green covers, except, they did make some Ducks Unlimited with those covers.

Sorry I couldn't be more help

Thanks for looking Tom...
Your theory about the Ducks Unlimited issues makes sense. If they had extra covers hanging around, then why not use 'em up.
I just thought it was a bit unusual...... that was why I ask.

They did quite a sizeable line of Skoal knives with those covers. I think that was the first use of them.

Heck.... no wonder the seller had this one I got list as having black covers...... In pictures, it's hard to tell the black from the green.
Anyway.... my 12OT has dark green covers.... sounds like there might even be some out there with black covers (??)
Interesting!!!

And the Skoal version has an extra blade?
Hmmmmmm
