Funky cover material on a Ulster 55

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Funky cover material on a Ulster 55

Post by Meridian_Mike »

Well, a couple of you guys saw this one on the bay before I took it for the BIN price.
I promised I would try (with your help) to figure out what the handle cover material is.
Well, it just arrived and here is a few UP CLOSE pics of the covers....

.
My first impression is that this is some sort of celluloid material. It looks a whole lot like the stuff Boker had on some of their knives from that time period. (Nu Horn...???)
It looks like the base color is a clear to slightly cloudy yellow with bands of red mixed in. There is also some light streaks of a light color (maybe off white) showing on the surface. it is definitely an interesting pattern!
What y'all think?
It also appears there is some signs of off gassing on the main blade....

And there you have it....

Looks like cel. I don't have any 55s similar to that. Would Ulster not pin the covers on? Maybe they were put on after it left the factory? Good looking knife either way. ::tu::

Great looking Ulster 55 Mike. ::tu:: I wouldn't venture a guess on the handles material.

If you look close at the pictures, it looks like there is a dark spot deep down in the material. I think that is where they were "melted" into the liners. This would take the place of a pin (maybe).

I'm gonna amend that earlier statement. I just looked up on the shelf and spotted an Ulster 50 with cel covers that are not pinned. It looks like this isn't so unusual.

I like it. The material on the Ulster looks just like the handles of a Pal that I own. Same translucent red and amber.
If I was smarter I'd post a pic...
