Advertising Knives

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Advertising Knives

Post by jxr1197 »

Some collectors don't care for them but I've always liked the advertising knives. Each one has a little story to tell. This green LB1 for Publix just showed up today. Who else has some advertising knives to share?

Very good focus for a thread. Advertising knives were more common before WW II. Schrade Cut Co and Schrade Walden both made many advertising knives, often using a Lobster pattern but can be found with most patterns.
I have a few but need to do a little searching as they do not live 'together'.

Yes, I always wanted to peek into that little window. If there was a nekkid woman in there I might buy one.

I actually have one of those nekkid girlie peep viewers. Was my Grandfathers, the little devil. Found it in his garage after he passed.

Beer knife - I hadn't even thought of that one. You can see mine is missing the stanhope but I actually have one and know of a business that can press it back in. Sorry Cal - Adolphus Busch himself is the image in there - or so I've been told.
Roland - I only have a few Cut Co advertising knives. The ones that impress me the most are the 2203s that were used. Most of my advertising knives are, predictably, Imperials.

I'll add it to the thread but this one here is a Schrade. There are 4 or 5 companies that made that knife. I believe the Schrade version is actually considered lowest on the totem pole and the others all sell for more money.

Schrade Cut Co for Elmhust Contracting c.late 20's-early 40's. That phone number NE9-9800 today would be (718) 639-9800 and when I googled it I found that the number belongs to another business but it's still in Elmhurst. Newtown was the Dutch name for that part of Queens going back to the 1600s. I don't know why the phone number didn't start with EL. Ma Bell was feeling nostalgic I guess.

The "melon testers" seem to often have advertising, here's a couple of my KA-BARs. Dunno why Iphone photos always come out sideways either at first or when enlarged?!?

I always like etched or engraved pearl handle knives, this one has different whiskeys advertised on each side and the same ones etched on the blades. Dang these Iphone pics make me nuts, gotta get a plain camera for this.

Thanks Jerry. When I load photos into my computer from either camera or iphone they are always properly aligned. When I upload them to this site from my computer the ones from the camera stay properly aligned but the ones from the iphone get skewed. Sometimes the iphone photos are skewed but when enlarged get straight and sometimes they are loaded straight and get skewed on enlargement. This does not happen on another forum. Doesn't bother me that much and I don't like other services when I can load properly on other sites. I also know that it makes you and a few others nuts, some folks don't seem to care, they can see the details well enough.

I think that's the 1st green delrin LB-1 I've ever seen. Nice!

Most of my knives with text etc on them are anniversary commemoratives. I don't have any that are advertising knives with a phone number etc. The closest are likely my 3 Schrade "Compliments" knives.

This Schrade Cut Co pen knife pattern was often used for advertising knives.
And this Schrade Walden 865 lobster pattern was used for the Chrysler Master Technician Conference "Leader 4 Years" award. I have a bunch of these. All say "4" years.
