Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.
This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.
The reason they look so similar is that they were both made by Schrade. The "Hammer Brand" is not an original New York Knife Co knife it is repro or "limited edition" made by Schrade. You will never see a genuine NYK Hammer Brand knife with a vertical USA.

Imperial bought the Hammer Brand name in the 1930s and used the name almost interchangeably with Jackmaster and Imperial. The tang stamp on the OP knife was in use from 1945-1955. Since Schrade joined Imperial, Ulster and Kingston (IKAC) at the end of 1946 they were related (and share a family resemblance) but that Hammer Brand knife was made at the Imperial Factory in Providence, RI, not at Schrade.
