Schrade 5" lockbacks that commemorate #33 Harry Gant & Skoal Bandit Racing

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Schrade 5" lockbacks that commemorate #33 Harry Gant & Skoal Bandit Racing

Post by bladecollectorr »

For a period in the 1990's Old Timer (Schrade) was a corporate sponsor of Harry Gant when he was driving his green #33 Oldsmobile Cutlass or Chevy Lumina in The Winston Cup.

UST (United States Tobacco) was a major corporate sponsor of Harry Gant. Gant was dubbed "The Bandit" after UST's Skoal Bandit logo that was featured on his cars. UST was also a pretty major customer of Imperial Schrade. They ordered many interesting SFO's (Special Factory Orders) over the years.

Schrade produced four (as far as I know) different Harry Gant commemorative knives that were their Bear Paw, LB7-type, 5" lockback pattern. Three have dark green fibron handles and one has yellow linen micarta handles. Two have nickel silver bolsters and two have brass. All four have a unique gold-filled etch (done by Baron Engraving). The micarta knife even has genuine scrimshaw artwork on both sides of the knife (unsigned).

Schrade also made Harry Gant commemoratives based on other patterns but these are the four Bear Paw knives.

lrv was kind enough to supply us with some production numbers regarding three of the four knives. It is currently unknown how many micarta knives Schrade produced but they are certainly less common than the others (100?).

I recently landed a HGLTD94 knife so I took some pictures of it by itself and grouped with the HG7LTD and micarta scrimshaw knife. I used to own a HG93LTD so I have some pics of that knife as well.

1992 HG7LTD #256
HG7LTD - Harry Gant LB-7 pattern, Special gold filled etch, LTD. tangstamp, brass bolsters, antiqued coined N/S shield, Oak box with glazed tile lid, Ship 9/15/92 - 200 (500?) pcs.
Schrade must have made more than 200 of these. Mine is number 256. Note the orientation of the shield to match the knife as it's displayed.

1993 HG93LTD "Mr. September" #139
HG93LTD - LB-7 w/ green fibron handles, serialized N.S. bolsters, coined N.S. handle shield, gold blade etch "Mr. September 1991", tile box, Ship July 1993 - 500 pcs.
I need to land another example of this knife to complete my set. I sold this one a few years back. These knives were shipped in the exact same displays as the HG7LTD and have their shields set the same way.

This two-sided 8 x 10 Imperial Schrade SC92-MS02 card-weight item portrays Gant with his 1992 Olds Cutlass and lists lots of bio information and car stats.

Most excellent collection, BC. I didn't realize that Schrade made so different SBR knives, learn something everyday ::nod:: .
Did you know that Imperial (Schrade) make a small stockman, also done in said commemorative livery. Nothing fancy, just the name acid etched across main blade, thought you would like to see :) .

Yesir, I do believe it is the AP26SBR, has the exact number on the box end.
