I finally got that 227 UH I was looking for

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

I finally got that 227 UH I was looking for

Post by Meridian_Mike »

I have been trying to put together an early set of the Uncle Henrys for a while now.

They are the ones with the "Schrade-Walden" tang stamp on 'em.

Well... as of today, I have the 227 UH in my hands.
Here HE is... SN 09269

Mike, check your folding UH hunters to see the thickness of the Delrin covers. The first ones had MUCH thicker covers. This was true at least through the #4500s.

The 2 fixed blades I am looking for are the 171 UH and the 172 UH....

Here is a clip from the 1973 Catalog when the Company was still Schrade-Walden. I have been using this as my guide for the S-W knives that were available at that time...

Hey Mike, great knives! It’s amazing the serial numbers on your 127 and 227 are so close. I couldn’t do that if I wanted to. The SW uh’s are my favorites as well. Just so you know they made the first 153 golden spike with the Schrade walden stamp. Only a couple thousand of them. Also the 171 with the birds head pommel was first and then a more limited number so SW 171 in the new style. The 172 was made in limited numbers with the SW stamp. They are all few and far between. Especially in good shape.

I was amazed to see the numbers were that close. I could have searched 'till I was totally blue in the face and never done that on purpose....LOL.
Thanks for the info on the fixed blade UH's...
I have been mostly an Old Timer collector but I will say this..... I like the covers on the UH line a LOT more than the Old Timer covers.

Here’s the line up Mike. Forgot about the 165uh. They made those with some stamps on front side and some on the back side.

The first ones were stamped on the back or 'left' side. The first ones had the thumb grooves and non-stainless steel.

Thanks guys. I have these two and two others that are not SW. as far as I can tell they are the only 4 uh only displays. The 285uh in the top one is serial 062. The lowest serial I have.

Hey guys, here is a pic of both the SW easy vendors together. Schrade called them the SW69 and SW70. They list in the catalog that there is a version of the 69 with a 227 but I have never seen one. They also list a version of the 70 with a 172 in it but I have not seen that and don’t see where it could fit with the 171 in there. I don’t believe that happened unless they took the sheath out. Here are the catalog cuts.

I wonder if any of this has to do with when the knife was actually released?
I mean, by not having all the knives they offer in a display, then how would they sell the other one or 2 knives without having them in a display at a store?
Is there any documentation that shows when knives were available for the salesmen to offer?
These displays maybe? ::shrug::
.
That is some great info on the Uncle Henrys James.

Thanks for sharing!

Mike you are spot on. The numbers in the displays represent the years they were first offered. The 171uh came out in 1971. Same with the 172. But these are kind of unique examples as Schrade did not stick to that logic much. These displays were absolutely the Corner stone of schrades sales and marketing approach. They represent a big part of what the company was about and how they were so successful during a time of mom and pop retail stores.
