Schrade Walden
Schrade Walden
Any help with age, model & any other info would be greatly appreciated. Says Shcrade Walden NY USA but no model number. I figured for $10 it couldn’t hurt. Thank you

I think it's an 896K. Details here: https://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/co ... ck-knives/

Re: Schrade Walden
You were absolutely correct, it is an 896k. I have no idea how I overlooked seeing it on the back of the main blade. Thank you.jxr1197 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 20, 2022 5:06 am I think it's an 896K. Details here: https://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/co ... ck-knives/

Re: Schrade Walden
Your example was made from about 1953 to about 1961. It has celluloid handles. They continued to make them up until 1980, but with really ugly Delrin handles.
Re: Schrade Walden
Thank you. Is this the type of handles that out gas and cause rust issues?tongueriver wrote: ↑Thu Oct 20, 2022 1:49 pm Your example was made from about 1953 to about 1961. It has celluloid handles. They continued to make them up until 1980, but with really ugly Delrin handles.

Re: Schrade Walden
Yes, celluloid can outgas, but if your handles look good they probably will be fine as long as they are protected from heat, light & moisture (in excess, of course). They like at least a little air circulation; don't lock them up in a plastic bag or something like that. I have knives with celluloid handles that are over 100 years old.

Re: Schrade Walden
I think the butter and molasses celluloid is one of the more stable ones, it does not seem to gas out as much as some others.

Re: Schrade Walden
The worst two that I have seen were Schrade Walden 835 uyellow shadow bolster 3 5/16 inch stockmans, and several different Western Boulder cracked ice fixed blade knives. Probably the worst of all are now extinct so we don't see them anymore. Schrades in slick black (and many others, really) seem to be very perky yet.

Here is a pre-war celluloid knife that is extremely beautiful, very rare, and quite stable.

Re: Schrade Walden
That is quite the colorful knife. Schrade's old celluloid does seem very stable. Great find.tongueriver wrote: ↑Fri Oct 21, 2022 3:41 pm Here is a pre-war celluloid knife that is extremely beautiful, very rare, and quite stable.
I don't always respond to great posts but I always appreciate seeing them. Thanks for posting!
