Odd Stamping on Eye

Post by keithw »

I ran across this one on Ebay today.
The tang stamps look odd to me, and I don't recognize the pattern. ::hmm::
The Eye stamp usually has "Germany" under it, and it looks way too big.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Definitely not an old Eye. I am suspicious as to its origins, sad to say.

Another with similar looking stamps. Doubtful it's an original eye.

I've seen 3 or 4 with this type of stamp floating around. Wonder where they came from?

I'm not versed in this brand... But now that I've taken a few moments to compare the eBay-listed knife with my Carl Schlieper, I'll state the obvious.

Nothing Under "Eye" on My Very Old Stockman...
Image

Just some of the obvious inconsistencies with the genuine Carl Schlieper "German Eye" stamp are as follows:
1) the ray-beam at the 12 o'clock position is too short;
2) the eye lid should not narrow at the sides;
3) line above eye lid should be a gentle bell curve;
4) as already noted, the stamp is too big for the tang; and
5) the stamp isn't centered on the tang.

Further, my "German Eye" (shown above) is on the reverse tang; the front tang exhibits what Paladin refers to as the "straight line stamp." For the eBay-listed eye to not have "Germany" beneath it, the other side of the tang would've been stamped if it were of a known variety -& the "straight line stamp" would most likely be on the front.

I'd like to add:
Keith, thanks for sharing what you've encountered... It's brought to light something all collectors should watch out for.

I've seen that stamping frequently over here. I think it was another company with a similar trademark or just an older/different version of their stamp.They seem to be pretty decent knives. ::shrug::
