Newest Case Pick-Ups

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

This knife arrived today. It's a 1992 Case XX, single drop point (etched) blade, zytel handles, lockback pocket knife. Case made a series of pocket knives featuring NASCAR drivers. This knife features Bill Elliott, driver of the #11 race car. I didn't specifically buy this item, it was included in a group of items that I bought. Contrary to what it suggests on the packaging, I'm not going to collect them all. It is in MINT condition in the original, plastic container.

Thanks everyone!!!! I've been wanting a Case 5375 for a while. She's not a valuable one, compared to the older ones, but I was smitten so to speak!!! LOL!!! She's an 8 dot, from 2012. She'll be in rotation now!!!!

Quite possibly......it's very toothy...
I hoped quoting your reply would carry the picture of your 6318's master and sheep's foot blades forward. It did not.

It appears that a previous owner ground off so much metal that the choils are gone. Choils are the notches that separate the handle end of the edge from the tang. Choils are an added step taken to make sharpening easier. Choils are standard on Case, Queen, and GEC. Buck and Camillus knives seldom if ever have choils. Common electric kitchen sharpeners and hardware store grey bench stones are too coarse for the thin edges on Case pocket knives. I suspect that's the sort of sharpener that was used.

You Tube has videos of Case's manufacturing process. Standard pocket knives are given one pass on each side against a belt sander. The sanding belt is not fine enough to make them sharp enough for me but they do cut things. I'm happy with Case's sharpening, or lack of sharpening. Sooner or later I hone all the knives that I use on hard Arkansas stones. What's one more sharpening? I'd rather not pay for Case's employee to spend the time on it.

In the past Case stamped some tangs SSP. That stood for stainless steel springs and blades and polished edges. Contrary to popular rumor the P did not mean polished blades. It meant finely honed edges. 1970s Cases with satin finished stainless blades with tangs stamped SSP are common. Older Cases with blades etched razor edge are also common. I presume the hand work raised the price.

I picked up this Lansky1 Ratcliffe mod in a swap recently. Although I do not collect this particular pattern, I have seen enough Muskrat tang stamps to recognize that this one has an atypical pattern stamp. I assume this must be some kind of 9/11 commemorative?? Until this one, I had only ever seen the word "Muskrat" (no numbers) used as the pattern stamp on the Muskrat pattern.

BTW...I should note that this Ratcliffe was actually the "addy" that John threw in to sweeten the deal. Totally unnecessary since I was perfectly happy with the trade goods without this one; but, adding this to the swap really put it over the top (I'm not used to being the one who walks away feeling I got the better end of a trade deal, but this time I definitely came out ahead...thanks, John :D ).

Found this sorry looking CaseXX 640045R at the swap meet today for $5. Good snap and no real abuse on any blade or tool. I believe this is from 1965-1969. I do not have a Case for my Camp knife collection. Only have 12 so it is quite small. Anyhow it will be a nice restoration project.

Nice find and cool restoration project. Looking in Steve's book (Page 161), it looks like it was originally jigged Black Composition but he also has a 1990 pictured with jigged Black Delrin. You might be able to find jigged Black Comp. if you decide to go that route. Don't forget to post the finished product. ::tu::

Two new trappers to add to the collection. A Gray Corleon and a 6.5 Stag. The Corleon looks like a chunk of granite, really cool.
Also purchased a custom made display from a young man on the Case XX knives Facebook page, I am more than pleased to hang this one on the wall and start filling her up!
