Ode To The 07

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

It came today. Fast service by the seller and the USPS. It's a 2020 Case 6207 Mini-Trapper with Fire In The Box Corelon handles. I've been looking at them for several months and I'm thrilled with it.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe that is what Case called "Pretty Bone"...a curious name, IMHO, because many of the examples I have seen are a lot like yours: mostly dark (black or brown) on one side, sometimes showing lighter highlights near the bolsters and/or along the edges; and a more colorful/variegated/splotchy color on the other side.

Here are a few of mine from the same era for comparison:

Thanks QT. Case has so many variations! You're right it's dark on the mark side and multi hued on the pile side. J.O'.

Very nice Ridgegrass. I've got a couple from that era that have the same bone. Some have some really subtle variations, then others almost fade to a natural bone on one end.

Well, my friends...it appears OCD Mini-T Monkey has finally "jumped the Mini-T shark"

Yeah...I know I said that the 3-blade 6307W was too thick (and I still think it is), but I had no idea what "thick" really was until I got this 5-blade "Baby Beast"...a knife I was pretty sure I didn't want precisely because of its thickness.

But, in a moment of weakness, I put in the minimum opening bid ($129.00) and ended up winning the auction (I was the only bidder)...which, to be honest, totally surprised me :o because I was not expecting to win at all since it's common to see _507s sell for north of $200.00, especially stag.

Other than the thickness (a whopping ¾" at the thickest point of the stag handle scale...which is "SAK thick" IMO), I have only two complaints with the 'Baby Beast' 5507: there's no Wharncliffe blade (apparently the MOP 8507 is the only _507 model deemed worthy enough to warrant a Wharncliffe blade), and the very weak snap on all but the master clip and spey blades (which are also the only blades that have half-stops). There's almost no closing snap at all...the blades must be pushed back into the blade channel to fully close. ::disgust::

This will probably be the last Case Mini Trapper I buy (at least until Case releases another 07W), so it's only fitting that it's Stag; one of my top two favorite handle materials (along with ivory, of course). :)

I just have the one 6307 and have no desire for more. I also have no desire to own a "Beast" especially at the prices they go for.

All that said, I may have to snag one of those tang stamp history handle 07's. Monkey see, monkey do ya know. Where did you get yours?

I first saw the Case "50th Anniversary Dot Dating System" SMKW SFO in one of their early 2020 catalogs.

https://www.smkw.com/catalogsearch/resu ... ing+system

I really liked it, but, unfortunately, there were no 07 patterns in that run. ::disgust::

Then, I just happened to stumble upon a 6207 with similar handles in Matthew Sander's AAPK store and I bought it. The date stamp on my 6207 shows 2006, and the tang stamps etched on the handle are actually from Case's earliest years going back over 100 yrs to pre-1920. So, naturally I then had to buy the display stand with the more modern tang stamps on it because...well...OCD Mini-T Monkey insisted. (You know how it is with Mini-T Monkey: monkey see, monkey want--and poor ol' ~Q~ has to buy it) ::nod::

Seems my two Limited Edition Autumn Second Cut Bone 07's are breeding in captivity and spontaneously produced these two which do not have the Limited Edition blade etch. Curiously, one of the new offspring has an unusually narrow master clip blade. The knife does not appear to have ever been used, so I wonder if the narrow blade was actually made this way at the factory (perhaps by a novice cutler who went a bit overboard on the grinder) and somehow managed to slip past QC. ::shrug:: Or, maybe it's actually a Muskrat blade that inadvertently got put on a Mini Trapper. ::shrug::
