eBay listing - old Case whittler??

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

eBay listing - old Case whittler??

Post by Mumbleypeg »

I’ve been watching this listing, which the seller says is a W.R. Case & Sons 8387. https://www.ebay.com/itm/WR-Case-Sons-8 ... Swzd5cgEcS The first time I saw it the seller wanted $2000 and stated in the listing that he didn’t care if it sold or not, if he couldn’t get $2000 he would keep it.

After that listing expired, the knife was relisted with a starting bid of $500, which is the auction currently running now.

I happen to have a W.R. Case & Sons 8387, and a Case Tested 5387. The sellers knife appears, at least from the pictures, to be different from my knives. The difference appears to be mainly in the shape of the master and the pen secondary. The stamps are also different. Here’s the seller’s knife.

Here are my knives, both of which I believe to be correct. (My 8387 has a broken tip on the file blade.)

And here for comparison are some cuts from Sargent’s 7th Edition.

Here’s a link to the only other Case 8387 I found here on AAPK, aside from mine. viewtopic.php?f=17&t=43858&p=438908&hilit=8387#p438912

I’m not saying the seller’s knife isn’t correct, but in the pictures it sure looks to be different than mine. Camera angle might account for the difference in appearance of blades, but the spear and pen blades on the seller’s knife appear to have fatter bellies, the swages and choils appear to be cut differently, and the stamps are different. ::shrug::

Sorry for the lengthy post but these represent all the research I’ve done trying to figure out the seller’s knife. Now for the $64 question - what are your opinions (learned and otherwise)?

Ken,the choil on the OP knife is very large like you will find on Catt blades. Can't see the stamp good enough to tell for sure if it is good or not.Could be cobbled from restamped blade or blades.

First glance at the OP knife I don't like it. On closer look I like it less.

Ken, your knives I do like, a lot.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

I'm with Wayne! I like the frame and the file blade (note pattern number on file blade - it is original). The master appears to be shaved and re-stamped and pattern number added - enough for me to pass.

Thanks y’all, for looking and for sharing your knowledge. With knives this rare it’s hard for me to judge with certainty since I haven’t seen many examples. Thanks for looking and sharing your expertise, confirming my opinion. ::tu:: I think I’ll put it on the counterfeit watch thread.

And thanks for the nice comments on my knives. I like them too.
