Case 6318HP - questions

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Case 6318HP - questions

Post by Rotten »

Picked up this 6318HP in a trade a few months ago and find myself admiring it often. Other than some slight discoloration on the spay and sheepsfoot which I think you can see in the second picture I can find nothing wrong with it. Didn't think to grab a pic of the blade well but other than a little dust it is perfect.

I have a couple of other Case stockman from the same era and even though this one is dark I believe it to be red bone. Am I correct?

This knife is not for sale but I would like to put an honest valuation on it for my records. Anyone have an idea on value?

Here's a few pics.

Wonderful old 18 pattern. They’re fantastic little knives imo. Personally though, I would not call that red bone.

I would call this red bone.

Nice knife Trace, one of my favorite patterns to carry (in fact there's one in my pocket right now). ::tu:: As for the color of the handle covers, that's not "red bone" . Although it does have a reddish tint that's what I'd call standard reddish brown bone. As for value if it was dead mint probably around $125. Condition is everything. I'd put yours at around $85-$100. JMO

But don't take my word on value - best bet for current value is to check eBay sold listings. Look for sales on a same-age knife as yours (1965-69) XX U.S.A. and in similar condition.

OK then reddish brown it is. I mis-remembered the years on the other ones I have that are actually mid 70's and definitely brown.

Here's the 6318 with a same era 6347. Took them out in the light for a better picture. Been telling myself they were red but I can live with reddish brown.

It's not Red Bone. It's Red-ish. If you look at eBay listings for Case knives, most of them are being called Red Bone and they're not. And if the bone has even the slightest hint of red in it, they call it Red Bone.

As far as value, as we always say, that's subjective. The value of anything is what someone is willing to pay for it. But as far as your knife is concerned, and because you asked, if the blades have good snap, there are no cracks in the handles, there is no blade wobble, and there is nothing else wrong with it and you were selling it, I think a fair price is around $85-$90.

Others might see it differently but that's me. (Very nice Case 18 by the way). ::nod::
