New Member, Wanted opinions on this 6488
I just got this knife in a small collection that I purchased. It looks pretty good for it's age. Would you rather have the damaged scale fixed? Restored or left as is? My personal opinion is that it has earned its patina and I would just like to find a replacement scale and leave it pretty much as is. The blades are all tight except large sheepshead has a little play.

I probably would patch it with Acra-Glass, but that's just me.Buck Casey wrote: ↑Wed Jun 30, 2021 6:41 pm I just got this knife in a small collection that I purchased. I can't stand knives with missing pieces of handle material.

I agree with David, missing handle material is a big deal breaker, I won’t even look at a knife that has missing handle material.
Whether you fix it or leave it alone depends on your plans for the knife. If you just want to use it and it doesn’t bother you, then just leave it alone. If you want to sell it, the replacement of the handle might cost more than you can justify on a resell. The Acra-Glass is probably the best low cost option.

Very nice knife c. 1940-64. I would just patch the missing piece next to the rocker pin head and tighten the pin head next to the sheepfoot (very, very carefully).

Thanks for the ideas. I haven't tried Acuglass yet. I'm pretty handy with JB weld. Matching color and texture to make the scale look right seems pretty artistic to me. Are there folks on this Forum who are good at this. ::dang: I plan to keep it but I have a lot of newer knifes to bang around in my pocket. I just want it to look good sitting on shelf.

Welcome to AAPK. If you just want to display it, just put the “bad” side to the back. If you want to try repairing it, I agree Acraglas is a good option - here’s some info about it and pictures of results https://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/kn ... 37&t=57370

AcraGlas is the only way to go on a small missing piece like that. Thanks Ken for posting the link above.
