Case Tested 6235 EO (Maybe) or What Have I Got???

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Case Tested 6235 EO (Maybe) or What Have I Got???

Post by herbva »

I fished this one off the bay a while back and would like opinions regarding this knife. It measures 3 3/8, so I am assuming it is a pattern 35. I believe the closed C shield indicates it is a Case Tested. I can't see even a whisper of the remains of a tang stamp (second picture), and I see no indication that the knife has been altered or tampered with. But in looking at Steve's great book and my other reference books, the only EO pattern 35s I see are 0035's, made with composition scales and no shield, and probably not made by Case. I love the bone on this knife and want to restore it with better blades, but want to find out first what I have here. Surprisingly, the worn down blades do have a little bit of snap left. Any and all opinions would be greatly appreciated! :D

Here's a similar Case shield, on a Tested 2345 1/2 at 3 5/8" for comparison, Herb.

If your measurement is correct then it may not be a #35 as knifeaholic's book says the #35 is 3 1/4".
There is a 6214 with out an easy open that measures 3 3/8" with the same blade pattern a spear and a pen. ::shrug::

Could it be 3 1/2"? From Sargent's 2nd, Page 212.

There's also a 6216EO that's 3 3/8", Page 44.

Your blade looks more like a spear than a clip. ::shrug::

Hi Treefarmer. Now that you mention it, I remember noticing before that my copy of Steve's book (2nd edition) describes the pattern 35 (first paragraph, page 147) as "3-1/4" closed, but 9 of the 10 pattern 35's pictured have "3 3/8" under each picture and the other picture in the bottom left corner of page 148 (a "Kingston USA" contract knife) does not mention the length. So, I went back and more carefully measured my EO knife, and lo and behold it is 3 5/16, and so is the only other pattern 35 that I currently have. Go figure............. ::hmm::

Looks like a '35 pattern, the '14 is noticeably slimmer. The 6235 EO is certainly an actual Case pattern. I believe that the '16 pattern was always bare-headed whereas the '35 was capped. Here is my accidental collection of '35's which includes a 6235 EO (the second knife from the top is an '035 1/2):

Hi John. Good to see you back on line buddy. Thanks for the input. If it was 3 1/2" I would be thinking pattern 28 too. I think all the pattern 16's were "bareheads". Here is a pic of the EO knife next to the only 6235 I happen to have right now (1972 8-dot). I should have tried this before. The frames on both are identical - 3 5/16", but the bolsters look a bit different. Steve's book does picture one with a spear instead of a clip. ::hmm::

Very nice "accidental collection" msteele6! Seeing the EO in your pictures settled the question for me. Now, if I can just find that replacement spear blade I need to put in mine..........

::hmm:: This might be a Steve or Ken question- would the absence of a "1/2" in a Case pattern number change the bolster configuration?

No, the 1/2 only designates a clip mater blade. Nothing to do with bolsters.

The posted knife is an authentic 6235 EO. Not mentioned in my book only because I did not venture to try to describe all the pre-1940 knives.

As to the closed lengths, Case barlows and 35 patterns could vary from 3-1/4" to 3-3/8" closed. Sometimes dependent upon the particular set of tooling used, or on minor variations due to final hafting.

As far as I know, the 14 was never made as an EO, nor the 02. And as MSteele said, the 14 and 02 are slimmer than the 35.
