case 61749l ss year?

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

During the 1980s the “lightning S” denoted stainless steel blades. The regular S meant carbon steel (CV) blades. Everything else is the same. By 2000 Case had stopped using the lightning S stamp, instead stamping either SS (as your knife has) or CV.

To determine the year, count the X’s and dots as usual.

Case XX tang stamps used after 1999

In 2000, Case developed a dating system using an old style Case XX stamp along with a mix of dots and x’s both above the Case XX symbol and below. Case started with 5 x’s, and 5 dots in 2000. For each year thereafter, they removed one dot. When all of the dots were gone after 2005, the x’s were removed one by one until 2010.

Sorry I don’t know anything about the blue S.W.A.T. paper - never seen it before. ::shrug:: See here for how to date your knife. https://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/co ... ification/

Edit: re-reading this post, I need to clarify the statement “Case had stopped using the lightning S stamp”. What I meant by this is they stopped using the lightning S solely to denote stainless steel. At some point they began stamping SS on a blade to denote stainless steel. (On the OP knife “SS” is part of the pattern number stamp). Someone here may know the exact details of when this was changed.

All 1980's knives had the "lightning S" whether SS or CV.

IIRC it was the early 90's after the tang stamp change back to dots that they went to "lightning S" for SS and "round S" for CV. They still do it that way.

The OP knife is a 2001.
