Anyone know anything about the background on this, when it was made, why doesn’t it have the Remington UMC circular shield on the tang (Just has the word “Remington” on the tang), etc.?

One of a multitude of modern Remington reproductions. Don’t know who made it but someone here may know. Might be a Bear product.

Re: Information on this Remington
I cannot say on this specific knife, but many newer Remington branded knives are not made in the USA.
Most that are (Bear & Son, etc.) have "USA" on the tang stamp.

Re: Information on this Remington
The U.S. tariff law of 1890 requires goods imported for sale in the U.S. be marked with the country of origin. Post-1965, made in the U.S. intended for sale in the U.S. must also be marked U.S.A. Those are U.S. customs regulations. Some skirt the letter of the law by using stick-on labels, labels or print on the box, etc. Sometimes the physical size of the item requires compliance to be a code, label, or some other contrivance (shouldn’t be needed in your case). Some have inked the COO on the item (unfortunately ink can later be polished off, or wears off with use). Whatever gets by the customs inspector.
There should be a country of origin marked somewhere.
