Where Are All The Remington Knife Collectors?

The Remington Corporation and the knives that they built have influenced the U.S. cutlery industry more than nearly any other manufacturer. From the time America was settled, to the end of WWI, American knife companies struggled to compete with Britain and German imports, but events that occurred during and after the First World War led to a great change in this phenomenon. Unprecedented opportunities arose, and Remington stepped up to seize the moment. In the process, they created some of today's most prized collectables. In an ironic twist, the next World War played the greatest role in ending the company’s domination of the industry.

Keith, that's a beautiful old Remington toothpick. I like how the etch straddles the saber grind line.

Nice scores on those knives Roger ::tu:: ::tu::

I wanted to share this Remington Orange Blossom Lobster - I found this knife on a local hunt not long after I started collecting but never took any photos… I believe it is a R6454 but the model # is not on the pile side of the master blade… coupled to that the Remington tang stamp is very worn on the mark side of the same blade (almost more clear on photo of all blades open) - so I am not sure if the pile side model # was worn… it seems to me the knife was a favorite pocket carry as I can see the wear on the coined or milled liners – It seems that only the master blade was ever used with no sign of wear on the pen blades (but no doubt the sides of the pen blades next to the liner have some dark staining not seen on other side of those blades) - not even sure the master was ever sharpened and unfortunately just used and the cutting edge was abused abit towards the tip – snap is great on all and MOP is near perfect… the liners seem to be nickel silver but with a fair amount of brass given the color – the best I can tell from tang stamp is it “may” be 1933-1935… Also I believe I am seeing final factory finish or grind lines indicative of a glazed finish on the master blade that are only visible when the light hits it right – see tang stamp photo… I have maybe 5 or so knives, not Remington, that have original grind lines that are very similar…

Anyway is it unusual for a Remington Orange Blossom Lobster to “not” have a model # as a pile side stamp – or after 1931 to 1940 were not all knives stamped with model numbers? Trying to figure out this Remington pattern so thanks for any help!!

Lee, your knife looks like a R6454. Very nice knife. Thanks for showing us. Here is mine for you to compare with. Mine has a pattern stamp but I don't have a picture of it.

My observation is that more knives were produced in the 30's without pattern stamps than in the 20's. I dont know that I've ever seen a 20's knife with an ink pattern stamp but have seen many ink pattern stamps in the 30's. So your knife may have come with an ink stamp but has long since been rubbed off. Once again, only my observation.

Thanks Keith ::tu:: ::handshake:: ... much appreciated! Thanks for confirming as I thought it was a R6454 according to Stewart and Ritchie - BTW the value prices in that book I think are abit absurd - would somebody really pay $600 for a mint one ::shrug:: .. not me... Thanks for posting your beauty of this pattern knife ::tu:: ...

I appreciate the info on the stamping in the 1930s... I thought I had read this somewhere and always assumed the same as you note... this is the kind of info I have not seen in any reference book (Stewart and Ritchie have very little background such as this) so folks like yourself who really focus on Remington are no doubt the best source of info...

As I was putting away the Remington Orange Blossom I noticed my Muskrat so got some long awaited photos - think I got it 3 or 4 years ago... Always wanted a Remington Muskrat and this was right time and place when I found it.. To me I always associate Remington with this pattern.. I assume it was pretty popular given I see them fairly often though the condition is not always great...

R4593 and the tang stamp puts it in the 1924-1933 range, and the tang stamp is the same on both blades with only one marked with the model# on pile side.. anyway a nice imo HOK and still solid in all ways - not abused but used :) ... What I thought was interesting was the jigged bone - my perception of Remington bone was somewhat different having viewed other examples - some others appear much darker in color with a somewhat different jigging pattern etc but again based on my perception... I believe these handles are original given the pins - but is it just me or is this bone common in terms of appearance (color, jigging pattern etc)?? Thanks ::tu::

I am not a remington collector; can't help but appreciate them though. This is my only, 1924-33. I use it sometimes.

Nice scout knife Paul ::tu:: ..

Thanks Keith ::tu:: ... nice examples and definitely similar to mine - I noticed different tang stamps too so perhaps not all same time period ... wonder what the background is behind these lighter dyed bone handles ::hmm:: ..
