Remington lobster knife with hallmarks on tang - Identify

The Remington Corporation and the knives that they built have influenced the U.S. cutlery industry more than nearly any other manufacturer. From the time America was settled, to the end of WWI, American knife companies struggled to compete with Britain and German imports, but events that occurred during and after the First World War led to a great change in this phenomenon. Unprecedented opportunities arose, and Remington stepped up to seize the moment. In the process, they created some of today's most prized collectables. In an ironic twist, the next World War played the greatest role in ending the company’s domination of the industry.

Remington lobster knife with hallmarks on tang - Identify

Post by jeknife25 »

I need help identifying a Remington lobster pen knife. The tangs are marked with the circle Remington mark used between 1921-1924, Remington UMC inside a circle with no marks on the outside. The tang has three hallmarks that look like a W in one, G in another and e in the last one. The handles are fancy marked metal. Can anyone tell me what model this is and what the hallmarks mean? Thanks

That is the R7039 in my books. Not sure what the hallmarks are for but the books list the handle scales as gold. I think they are gold plated. They are from the 1920-1940 good old days. My R7059 has the same hallmarks. The hallmarks made them look good hanging on a gold chain with the gold watch.

Thanks for the information about the knife. I have one like yours. This one has different handles. Your knife has a place for someone to engrave their name or initials. This one doesn't have that area on the handles. I believe this one is a little larger also. This knife is 2 3/4 inches in the closed position.

Heres a couple pages from a Remington catalog on the gold filled knives. You should be able to click on the picture and it will enlarge so that you can see it better.

I know this is an old post, but I was recently searching for information on these Remington gold handle knives.

I found the identical hall mark attributed to W. G. Clark & Co., Inc. 99 Chestnut St., Attleboro, Massachusetts

The gold scales were most likely installed on the Remington skeleton knife frames by W.G. Clark jewelers.
