Is this a razor or a knife?

Post by orvet »

I found this yesterday at an estate sale, one of 2 knives there, the other being a SAK, which I passed on due to a bent tip.

On the front of this knife on the tang is stamped CHIROPODIST, (Chiropodist is another word for podiatrist, a foot doctor).

I cannot make out the stamping on the back other than the first 2 letters appear to be CL. There appear to be about 7 or 8 letters total on the top line. On the bottom line I can make out GERMA_Y, so I think that is safe to assume it says GERMANY.

The knife is a friction folder, constructed like a straight razor; no back spring, 2 handle halves pinned on to the tang and pinned at the other end with a spacer. The handles are made of French ivory (celluloid). It is hard to tell if it is flat ground or hollow ground, but I think it is hollow ground.

I think perhaps this is really more of a razor than a knife. Since it was made for a Chiropodist, I suppose one would call it a “corn razor.”

Does anyone have any knowledge about this knife or razor or of others like it?

Very interesting Orvet,
I am not sure what it is, but it does look a little like a 3" long folding medical scalpel I have which is from the 20's.

First gunstock corn razor I've seen. The name could be Clauberg who was a manufacturer of knives in Germany. Not much of a stretch to believe they made corn razors as well.
Here are a few of mine.

Thanks for the info Ray!
From the first two letters I can make out, "C" & "L", and the parts of the others letters that I can still see, it could easily be "Clauberg."

It is fun to find out little tidbits of info about an old knife you find somewhere.
