Connecticut Razors

Post by Beechtree »

Here are few old Connecticut razors to spark your fancy.

A cell handled WATERVILLE CUTLERY CO. WATERVILLE CONN. with a box which I believe is original to it, and nice gold WATERVILLE HAND FORGED etching.

A horn handled AMERICAN KNIFE CO PLYMOUTH HOLLOW CONN with ELASTIC EDGE RAZOR etch.

A thick cell handled NORTHFIELD CUTLERY CO. CONN with original box.
The box is a thick, really well made piece in itself. This also has a numbered ALBERT GUARD.

Glad you like them Gunstock Jack, I enjoy them as well.
I think that the Waterville is my favorite to look at. But of course each has there own merit. The other two have very nice heft in the hands. The horn feels really nice to hold on to, and the Northfield I would imagine using every day with much liking.

Thanks FRJ and Owd Wullie,
I am fortunate to have them you are right FRJ, I really enjoy the large flat face of a straight razor blade and the etching which can be done on them. I have not been to the Northfield site but many times have I driven by the road which it is on. How about yourself?

Sorry about not getting back sooner.
So you use Rt. 254 through Northfield from time to time. I live in Terryville up Rt. 6 from Thomaston.

I think you would find this place very interesting, Beechtree. It would be a pleasure to meet you there sometime.

Sorry this is so Belated Joe, I would love to get together there some time. I actually stopped by a few months ago and it was fantastic! And really well preserved. I just learned the location of American Shear & knife co factory so I will have to try to get there as well.

Here are a few rare oldies.
1) B. T. Co. (Bronson Townsend Hardware) New Haven Conn Razor (1923-1938).

2) Challenge Razor Works Bridgeport Conn. (1891-1899) Mint condition "Challenge" razor. It is lying on a Waterville Cutlery Co. Strop.

I concur! VERY nice.

I'd bet that Challenge "Sheffield Hollow Ground" is one of the earlier ones made in Bridgeport. The name changed from Challenge Razor Works to Challenge Cutlery in 1898.
