Kabar 1189 GMC

The KA-BAR brand originated as a trademark of the Tidioute Cutlery Company. Tidioute was later taken over & renamed the Union Cutlery Company which continued making the brand until Union eventually adopted it as the company name in 1952. Cutco Corporation later acquired the company in 1996.

Kabar 1189 GMC

Post by Snapper »

I bought this for my brother at BladeAuction back in the day because he always has had GMC trucks. He recently gave it back to me because he don't use it.
I would like to know more information about the knife.

I feel that surely someone here knows information about this knife.
Was this knife made for the General Motors Corporation or does the GMC stand for something else?
Thanks in advance and have a great day.

The engine in my profile pic is a 1962 Dodge/Plymouth Super Stock 413 RB also known as the 413 Max Wedge.

Since I just came across this thread, I'll do my best to answer. That doesn't look like any GMC truck logo that I've seen or been made aware of. However, if you look at the GMC page on Wikipedia...

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/GMC

There are many entities whose names could be condensed down to "GMC." Many of those entities are likely too small and/or little-known to have seriously considered having a knife with a specific tang stamp produced. I can't picture many of the others wanting to do such a thing. So GM seems the most likely.

I'm right at 50% sure that "GMC" in this case refers to General Motors Coach and Truck Division. Whoever had it made, it's a really spiffy knife!
