Tidioute Hobo

The KA-BAR brand originated as a trademark of the Tidioute Cutlery Company. Tidioute was later taken over & renamed the Union Cutlery Company which continued making the brand until Union eventually adopted it as the company name in 1952. Cutco Corporation later acquired the company in 1996.

Tidioute Hobo

Post by chorizotaco »

Picked up a great condition hobo with Union Cutlery Co Tidioute PA. Couldn’t believe I got it!!

On the fork is stamped PAT 11/5/07. Knowing that in 1909 the name of the company officially changed to Union Cutlery this is a little odd. Both the knife and fork have the same stamp. I spoke with a gentleman that had the same hobo but with a Union Razor stamp. Any ideas???

Great find.
Not sure what is 'odd' here. Patent date is usually earlier than the date the knife was made. Maybe there is something i am not getting ?

Here's one in black bone. Obviously newer. Different fork profile but same patent date, stamped: PAT. Nov.5th,1907". Tang stamped: UNION CUT Co.,(over) OLEAN, NY (over) U.S.A.
Assuming with different fork, a spoon, and the can opener, the patent is likely only for the slip-lock knife design.
Yours is sure a beauty! They would look great in my KA BAR case, side by side. Lucky Man !::tu:: J.O'.

Like I said, 1909 is when Union Razor was dropped and Union Cutlery was born. Here is a utensil with a PAT date of 1907 with a stamp that wasn't created until 1909. I wonder if this is like the Case transition knives, blades with different year stamps on them...even two years apart? Thanks.

Read the post above by Ridgegrass.
A patent date can be used anytime after that date; i.e. a knife made in 1950 might be using a mechanism that was patented in 1907 (or any year prior to 1950) and so the patent date might be marked on one of the blades.
If you have a tang marking that was last used in say 1900 and it has a blade marked "pat'd 1907" then this would be odd. Would mean the blade with patent date is not original to knife.
